Note by Professor Douglas Brooks on Substack Tomorrow evening we begin Thursday Poets, five Sessions on Zoom. Of course no one need care what I think about our American political life and I presume no expertise but as a citizen taught to read and listen closely, think critically, and write argumentatively.

The effort to acquire data, analyze content, sort out facts, use reason and all of our tools to examine what is before us, and then draw whatever plausible (perhaps yet tentative) conclusions that can be drawn, I would call that "yoga."

We are going to do all of these kinds of things whether we admit to any process or not, whether we have any skill and cultivated abilities or not. Krsna called yoga "skillfulness in action": yoga-kausalyam, he says (cf., Bg, 2.20ff.)

Learning to think is the simplest way to summarize the point and unfortunately far too few ever learn or have the chance to learn such skills. And thinking is a skill. If we don't learn to do it well, we'll likely engage life rather less deftly. Life is hard enough. Let's not make it harder by giving up on our critical capacities as human beings.

Employing anything like this definition of yoga, such as it is, I would say a significant number of Americans are not only unqualified for citizenship but also make for some pretty lousy yoga.

Today I wrote about why a significant number of Americans prefer the chaos caucus that is the Republican Party and the Angry Children Table's effort to bring their nihilism to conclusion. Have a go if you like and let me know what you think.

All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie.

—-W.H. Auden

We must not lose our voices, resign or relinquish, forsake or surrender. Stay in the conversation and allow, even create what Jung called “collisions.” We collide when the world and our inner self find incongruity, discomfort, impediments or vexations. Our natural tendency is to retreat, allow the withdrawal to bury the experience.

When we can’t “collide” then our circumvention turns this shadow experiences into latent resentments and painful, undisclosed feelings. We usually try to camoufloge and disguise further, dissemble, stifle, and duck. Next thing you know we’re acting out and we don’t know why and it all compiles. So what can we do? We have to unfold the folded lie, as Auden puts it. We have to give permission for the collision and be kind enough, gentle enough, committed enough not wreck ourselves.

There isn’t only one way to lift those shrouded curtains of the soul but it’s not going to be easy because seeing yourself isn’t easy. The power of storytelling, mythic symbolism, and thoughtful contemplation can shelter and at the same time encourage disclosure.

We don’t have to lay ourselves bear, exposed and unprotected to address the inner collisions. But when we commit to the endowments of human genius in the cultural grace of the story, we can learn how to release and unwrap the inner narratives. Myths conceal themselves behind veils of truth so that the anxious unknown becomes less daunting, so we can enter into a more delivering, exonerating conversation with the self. The undiscovered territory is you.

This week we begin again our studies of the mythic possibilities: Thursday with poems and songs to Goddess Kali, Saturday with a fresh, innovative look at Krsna stories, and Sunday in the greatest tale ever told again and again: Mahabharata. You can find the Zoom links in your Newsletters But I’ll put them here too. Come if you can. We’ll make some safe collision, play inner bumper cars with the self in the cherished company of friends. Don’t try too many collisions all by your lonesome. Best to keep good company because you will become the company you keep. See you soon.

Democracy Must Save Itself 31/08/2023

It's easier to avoid the facts than to believe whatever makes us feel good. Writing about our odious politics is not my favorite thing to do e but it is, at least as I see it, necessary, even important. If we fail to speak when there is real danger upon us, what shall we do when we are no longer permitted to speak at all?

Democracy Must Save Itself There is still media talk about a Republican reckoning, that Trump’s legal troubles will catch up with voters. These voters loathe the n...

Rajanaka News Today, about Staying Close, Keepin' It Real, Going Forward Together

Here's a snip, read the rest too by clicking the link.
Remind yourself: the heart’s domain is vast, like the horizon that manifests without conclusion, the beauty always stands right before you. We need that beauty, that prospect of imagination and self-inquiry, because we are human and should remind ourselves, because meaning is created and can’t merely be acquired, because in troubled times we have to keep looking forward even when we might prefer to turn away. We’re going to be here for each other.

When I’m asked occasionally what is Rajanaka---is it a body of teachings, a method of learning, what is it? I think of what Appa said to me. Rajanaka is being present for each other, it is an invitation to share our gifts and to offer what the soul yearns to feel and to know. Sometimes that comes easily, other times it is a struggle. But we will be there for one another, and you are welcome any time you can come.

PSA: Some Pronunciation Help, Not the Word Police

Let's start here: How people choose to pronounce their names is the "correct" pronunciation. When words are borrowed into other languages then pronunciations can change. Thus, HIM-a-LAY-a is the English pronunciation of the Sanksrit HIM-AL-a-ya.

The presiding magistrate judge in the Trump DC Case was the honorable Moxila Upadhyaya.

The Sanskrit spelling of the Judge's first name would be MokSila. (I mean in transliterated Roman script.) That is the "hard" palatal "s" sound, like what you hear in the familiar Sanskrit words, moksa or ksatriya. Say, sorta' fast, "ick-Sh".) The choice to use an "x" in English comes pretty close to accomplishing the Sanskrit sound so long as you do not soften the "x" to "zha"-ish sound and say more like -ix (say "i-k-x(s)"). (By meaning her name is a feminine grammatical form meaning "One who is Liberated.")

Her surname is not uncommon in north Indian vernaculars and comes directly from Sanskrit. First, try this: UpAdh-yA-ya. In Sanskrit the first "u" is a short vowel like the "u" in "but.", thus say "uh". The first and second "a" is a long vowel (like "mAh"). The word Upadhyaya (and as a proper name) means "learned' or scholarly, usually a teacher of Vedic recitation or Sanskrit grammar and literature as such, more in the sense of a pundit than a "spiritual mentor" (where the word "acarya" would be more common for the latter of similar stature). Court judges in Sanskrit lore often have this very name! Her name more or less can mean "judge." The judge by ancestry has a typical brahmin name that is used across north India from as far south as Maharastra all the way east to Bengal).

The problem I am hearing is that people don't know where to put the emphasis. Thus: u-padh-YAAH-YAAH. (That's upa-adhy-AA-YAAH, any better that time?)

However the Judge says her name is obviously correct but this would be the correct Sanskrit pronunciation. I will say it aloud for you on our Zoom Sessions so every one can hear it.

Thanks for your attention. ---yr friendly Skt pundit

I was privileged to have spent hundreds of hours in conversation with Sally Kempton over these past 30 years. We really did talk about everything--- and as you all know, she could make even the trivial feel sublime and step effortlessly into the deepest places of the heart. She was kalyana-mitra, the true spiritual friend, a soul of such brilliance and inveterate goodness that the sublime became manifest simply by being in her company. If we become the company we keep then to keep Sally's company is to know Śrī Herself. Today I thank the 330 million, I feel so fortunate that Sally shared some of her many worlds with me, and with so many whose lives she changed, each and every one for the better. I will miss my friend. In this grief we share we will know love, again. She brought us so many gifts. Iti Śivam.

Aho’ Rajanaka,

I hope this finds you well. The Bristol forest is just as ferocious here in summer as it is in winter---everything wants to make the most of these brief, warm weeks This morning the Merlin App identified some 30 species of birds just from the porch. If you’re not familiar with Merlin Bird ID it’s pretty darn cool, and warmly recommended. Sounds like a coterie of brahmins, a cauldron of ghosts, and a parliament of pundits out there---you’d think they were chanting the Veda or sumthin’. Summer is an excellent time to join in our studies. Find out what all hubbub is about.

So an important update and by popular demand.

THIS SATURDAY we will begin a NEW Early Summer Session.
NEW SPRING COURSE ON ZOOM, BEGINS SATURDAY, MAY 20TH 5PM EASTERN. SIX SESSSIONS. The subject has changed (that being the popular demand part).
THE HEART OF RECOGNITION OR THE PRATYABHIJNAHRDAYA is one of the most important works of the traditions of Kashmir Saivism. Attributed to Ksemaraja, the direct disciple of the inimitable Abhinavagupta, the text conceptualizes the organization of the universe and the processes of our deepest engagement thought the concept of “recognition” as it is identified with the goddess Pratyabhijna. This will provide both an important introduction and a rich, careful study of the essentials of the tradition of Recognition. A new translation of the verses will also be provided. Accessible to all and going deep. What’ better?
We will study the work carefully from within its worldview so that you can appreciate the depth and nuance of the Kashmiri Saivite perspective---and we will take time to place it in a contemporary context, ask about its relevance to our lives, think about its claims, suss out its value for today. We will both praise it and bury it, all in good ways.
*DATES: May 20, May 27, June 3, June 10, June 17, June 26.
*Tuition is $16 per Session or $90 for all.
Please use the usual PayPal ([email protected]) or Venmo (douglas-brooks-8).
*Zoom link is the usual Saturday link: https://rochester.zoom.us/j/95057662268
*All Courses are recorded and available on our Archive for download. If you can’t make it live, you can still take the course, as usual.

SIX MURUGA MYTHS: THE NONBINARY ARCHETYPE
You may not be much familiar with Ganesha’s brother Murugan. He is really only “important” in south India where his temple cult is significant. But in this archetype of the Tamils resides one of the great body of stories and imagergy. One of Muruga’s names is Shanmukha, Six Faces, and for each there is a temple and a very particular story. We will go on mythic pilgrimage together to the six temple myths of Muruga. (In December we are visiting these very temples on India Pilgrimage. This would be a great opportunity to make these trips.

Description: Rasa means essence, taste, liquidity, flavor, sentiment, elemental feeling and emotion. At the heart of the study of poetry, Rasa Theory is a remarkable, rich, and complex method of analysis and appreciation of artistry and aesthetics. But rasa is also a roadmap, a process and practice, a method for understanding and exploring our most elemental feelings. Rajanaka has among the most developed and useful rasa traditions of yoga. At the center of every yoga is engagement with feeling and the development of “taste”: rasa is the core of our being and here we learn the way through that labyrinth of essence.
