Even teddy bears can be famous!

The TV star you can have at home...
When the period drama Brideshead Revisited was aired on British TV in 1981, there was an unexpected star of the show: Aloysius the teddy bear. The series, which was inspired by the Evelyn Waugh novel of the same name published in 1945, featured Aloysius as the companion of Lord Sebastian Flyte (he went to Oxford University as well as many, many pubs with him) and according to Bargain Hunt expert Thomas Forrester he is now an historic bear with provenance. “The bear was a major catalyst in the growth of the antique teddy bear market,” says Forrester. Made in 1907 by the Ideal Toy Company, Aloysius was bought in the 1990s by collector Ian Pout, who owns the Teddy Bears of Witney Shop in Oxfordshire in the UK and who is selling his museum collection in early December. He’s expected to make $35,000 to $50,000.
Aloysius’ original name is Delicatessen and he got the part in the miniseries when the director, Derek Granger, was looking for a well-worn teddy to play Aloysius. At that time Delicatessen belonged to English bear collector Peter Bull and he was already 74 years old (the bear, not Bull). He got his signature plaid scarf during filming, when he needed something to cover some sparse patches caused by repairs; Georgina Andrews, wife of star Anthony Andrews, gave him a scarf from the company Dak Simpson, which was owned by her family. When a movie on Brideshead Revisited was planned in 2007 the producers approached Pout in the hope that Aloysius might reprise his role, but at 100 years old, it was decided he was a little too frail.

Our Story

The Emporium of Everything is about giving as many things as possible and new lease on life and a new home. I believe most things can be recycled thoughtfully and stop them from ending up in landfill or discarded at the back of some long forgotten garden shed. The Emporium exists for this reason and as part of my pain management regime. Being distracted from the intense pain is a blessing. I am partially disabled with degenerative spondylithesis, scoliosis, spondilitis and haemangioma's a kind of tumour that is a ticking time bomb. All of this affects my whole spine and spinal cord. So emerging myself in my love of recycling antique, vintage retro and pre-loved items has become and integral part of pain management along with medication, lifestyle modifications, and reduced mobility.
