Fun night in Guelph with these guys at Manhattan’s - Stu Harrison on keys & Tyler Wagler on bass. Playing as a trio is always so enjoyable because there’s plenty of room for improvisation and the energy is strong! 🔺 These outstanding musicians are always up for new material too, which has kept things exciting!
The fall residency wraps in 2 weeks (Nov 17) but we’ll be back in 2024!

Here is my version of “Smile” - a song I’ve always held onto during difficult times in my life so I hope it lifts you up a bit too. ☮️

This absolute tragedy is so fresh and it is hard to find all the right words but Ori Dagan has summed it up nicely and this picture just captures her essence...

Indira’s presence will be deeply missed in our community. On a personal note, I have been going to her venue for many years but was fortunate to get to know her a little bit more during the pandemic as I would eat there a lot. Indira would bring my burrito outside and we’d chat...at that point, I sometimes hadn’t seen anyone outside of my own home for days and she helped ease the loneliness and social isolation. We bonded a bit through our shared experience of having partners with kids (and our guy’s coincidentally had the same name.) She was one of those acquaintances that felt like a good friend when you saw them. Often she was so busy - a very hard worker - but she always made time to say hello.

Indira really cared about people - it was very apparent by how welcome she made us feel at her establishment - musicians and patrons alike. When a staffer got COVID she even called me personally to notify me of the exposure (this was early days).

Indira supported local music so much too - her heart was just in it. La Rev was a haven for me after a gig or long day... a great meal, a drink and always running into people I knew from the jazz and swing dance communities.

It’s hard to make sense of why these things happen. You just can’t I guess. Never in a million years would I have guessed this would happen to her - even when I passed by on Thursday night and saw emergency crews, I figured it was probably for one of the people from the nearby shelter.

We love you Indira and we will never forget you. My deepest condolences to your loved ones during this difficult time.

Toronto’s Music Community is in mourning.
RIP Indira Nanavati Cadena
(July 28, 1987 - September 21, 2023)

A talented musician herself, Indira was the owner-operator of a well-loved Mexican restaurant and live music venue in Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood, La Rev. For over a decade she provided countless nights of joy for our city and always made the musicians feel respected and appreciated. An angel is singing and playing the piano in heaven…we will miss your smile, your soul, your music and your bright light, dear Indira.

My friend Joshua T. Aitkenhead, who has always been so supportive and encouraging, just shared these photos from my “Daydream” album release back in 2018. I’m currently writing a new album (working on it right now actually) and this was a nice reminder of a great day!❤️
Thanks Joshua!

Nashville! Thank you so much for a fantastic week of songwriting and a (sold out🤗) show at Rudy's Jazz Room.

The past week in music city not only inspired me but guided the direction of my next album in a big way...I’m now very clear on where I’m going with it and feeling supercharged to get it done. I haven’t felt an aha moment like that in a long time and I dare say my musical mojo is now back to pre-pandemic levels.

This was made possible in a big way by SOCAN Music setting me up at their artist residence for the whole week - what a huge help that was and I’m so grateful. (For my 🇺🇸 friends that’s like our ASCAP/BMI).

I met so many wonderful people, talented composers and was reunited with old friends. I was also brought to the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) who were so welcoming and have so many resources for songwriters. I’m still on cloud nine from the experience I had - like an alien finding my home planet or something 🤣.

Anyway, back in Toronto now and a few weeks off before some local shows in Ontario.... thanks Nashville, I love you! ❤️

p.s. thanks to Karen Kosowski for this pic - the full photo album will be on IG/FB stories later today.

Currently in Nashville, Tennessee. I got here yesterday and it has been wonderfully non-stop!

To give you an idea of what my latest adventure looks like, this was today:

8:30: woke up, tea time.
9 - partially wrote two songs..recorded ideas for later (I also have hundreds of vocal notes that I will attempt to sift through this week)

10:30-2:30: Arrived at studio #1,
co-wrote a song and recorded a demo (second in 2 days). Thanks to Douglas Romanow & Chrystal Leigh!

3-6:30: Off to the next songwriting session at studio #2 on the other side of town. Thanks to Anthony Priwer - it was really cool to check out APRA (Australasian Performing Rights Association) for the first time, great vibin’ space!

7-9:30: guitar/vocal rehearsal for Saturday’s show at Rudy's Jazz Room (more details in next post).

9:30: Reviewed the day’s work. Feeling like things were pretty productive!

12am: Still reviewing...time to force myself to sleep so I can do it all again tomorrow! 😎

As an ACTRA Toronto union member I am proud to stand by SAG-AFTRA

I’ve already seen from being a musician what happens when you don’t fight back in solidarity! Extreme threats to your livelihood call for extreme action, that is no question for me.

Now imagine for a moment if every single Socan/BMI/ASCAP artist - especially major artists - walked out of all live venues, Grammy & Juno awards until streaming was sorted?

Rest In Peace, Milan Kundera. One of my favourite writers (I’ve read nearly all of his books, multiple times) and also an exiled writer from former Czechoslovakia, like my grandpa. Kundera was prolific and continued writing into his 80s - most will know him by his most famous work, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”.

Feeling incredibly inward at the moment...is it just me?! ⛈
Anyway, I’m back in Toronto and trying to work on new music, though it’s admittedly been a struggle to give it as much time as I’d like to. My writing has been all over the map too but I suppose it’s leading somewhere. For now my process is to just be free of restraint and try to write good songs - we’ll see what happens, wish me luck!

Also, good news, my US work visa just arrived and I will be there this summer (and still looking to add shows if anyone has any leads).

Here’s what I have coming up for the next couple months. I will be hopefully adding to the calendar and you can find that, as well as all the ticket details at www.tiabrazda.com

Guelph, ON: May 6 & 12
New York, NY: May 22
Barrie, ON: June 17
Buffalo, NY: June 24
Nashville, TN: Aug 26

Hope you’re all doing well and maybe I’ll see you soon!

Throwback to 9 years ago when I got to sing on the commercial! Doesn’t time fly?!
Coincidentally, on the anniversary of it, my parents received their new mattresses from the BC, location! I have to say it was a great customer service experience too so I’m very proud to have done work with this Canadian company. Also, being the jingle nerd that I am (guys, for real, been obsessed since kindergarten) I especially loved this one because who doesn’t love this classic jingle??!!

Sorry, I know this is not music related but last night my parent's lost their home in a fire. It has been a really challenging last 12 hours and especially with being on the other side of the country.

My dad is still in the hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation and some other complications and Mom is staying with a family friend. They have lost everything (maybe a few things can be salvaged later but I doubt it). They had to make a run for it and mom didn't even have time to grab her ID! Thank goodness they are alive - that is all that truly matters.

I have started a GoFundMe fundraiser and I will also be going to help them and get them set up, wherever they may end up. They are pensioners/renters and didn't have insurance so this will be really starting over....any help, no matter how small is deeply appreciated. Feel free to share. Thank you for being an amazing community.

Back home and part of me already misses Europe. At the same time, I really have to say how thankful I am for the general attitude towards artists in Canada. It is a pleasure to work with 99% of the bookers in this country and in my experience, even if the terms are not amazing, there is a basic level of what is deemed fair when it comes to compensation.

While touring internationally, that has not always been the case. While some venues are totally fair and returning is a pleasure, I have run into some snakes that seem eager to try and take advantage of Canadians....because we are rich or something?! 😂 Perhaps because they assume our arts council is subsidizing our tours?

The bottom line is there are some very shady club owners out there...no surprise, this is the music business...but I also don’t appreciate being taken for a ride and I don’t leave quietly. If they’ve heard Canadians are all mild then I guess I’m a shocker 😆. I’ve received a few threats to ruin my career, blah, blah...but I’ve also learned that is always the classic response when you tell a crook what they are and they have no other defence.

I try not to let bad people get me down. I love playing for the always appreciative audiences. I love travelling. Certain clubs feel like a home away from home. Most of all, I love making music. To anyone who has ever tried to tear me down, you have only made me stronger so ******** and thanks! 💪 😘

Thank you to all the amazing audiences and listeners for all of your support on this unpredictable and incredible journey. This last tour had its ups and downs, that was for sure but I met the best people along the way. I will continue to focus on the good and avoid the bad...and I will NEVER stop making music.

See you on the road again soon!
XOXO, Tia
