The brilliant thing about meditation and mindfulness is that it’s so easy to incorporate it into your daily life. You don’t need to dedicate 40 years of your life to sitting cross legged up a Himlaya; you can meditate anytime, anywhere on anything.

Heck, I even meditate on a gin and tonic! Check it out….

Select the perfect glass feeling the weight and shape of it in the palm of your hand for a moment. Take the ice tray from the freezer pausing momentarily to feel the cold blast. Is it hitting your hands first or maybe your face? Be aware of where you’re feeling the sensation of cold.

Now take a lemon and pick a sensation to concentrate on as you roll it between the palm of your hands. Maybe it’s the feeling or the smell as the oils are released into the air under the friction of rolling. Has the citrus fragrance made you automatically start to salivate with the anticipation of the bitter taste? As you slice into the lemon become aware of the smell of thousands of lemony droplets exploding into the air in front of you? The c***k of the ice cubes hitting the bottom of the glass and each other.

Reach for the bottle of gin and as you did for the glass feel the weight and shape of it in your hand. Take a look at the label. Have you ever studied the label in detail? Does it contain a beautiful or intricate design that you’ve never noticed before. Ask yourself the question, does this please me? Noticing the things that please you will do wonders for your feelings of happiness. Now watch the gin cascading over those ice cubes. How are you feeling in anticipation of that first mouthful? Do you consider it your reward at the end of the day or are you frustrated that I’ve made you drag out the process thus delaying your gratification? Either way, know that simply by considering your feelings you are being mindful. You cannot get this wrong.

Now for the crowning glory the tonic. Notice the bubble and fizz as the level of tonic rises to the top of the glass causing the ice cubes to knock together.

Now drink. With the amount of attention you’ve just paid to the preparation of this drink, the first sip will be like no other you’ve ever tasted before so relax and enjoy.

One of the power tools you can utilise to manifest that which you want in your life is to cultivate a regular practice of meditation. Whenever I say that sentence out loud it tends to elicit a lot of eye rolling from anyone who has never meditated before and the stock answer of, ‘yeah but you’re supposed to totally clear your mind and I just can’t do that’.

I always have good news for anyone who says they can’t clear their mind though and that is that meditation is absolutely not about clearing your mind. It’s the opposite. For me meditation (amongst other things) is primarily about teaching myself to hold focus on a particular thing.

When it comes to manifesting, we often delay the manifestation as our attention gets pulled in a thousand directions at once. Regular meditation helps you to hone your focus and manifest more quickly. So when you next consider getting into a regular meditation practice look at it like this…….

You’re not meditating to get good at meditation; you’re meditating to get good at life.

What has meditation ever done for me?

Well aside from stress relief, getting rid of arthritic pain, helping me to sleep much better, making me feel more connected to nature and other humans, chilled me out on the inside and outside, created more time in my day, helped me to look younger (according to some friends), given me inner strength and made me a braver person.......aside from all that.....not much really.

Think you have no time to meditate? Well if you've got a spare 3 minutes then give this one a go!
• Place your hand on the center of your chest and close your eyes.
• Breathe slowly, deeply and rhythmically. Know that by doing this you are signaling to your body to let it know that you are at rest and therefore safe.
• Continue to breathe in and out slowly for a few moments. Imagine that you are breathing directly in and out of your chest.
• Now bring to mind a person, place, a situation, maybe even an animal that brings up great feelings of love, joy or appreciation within you. Stay with this feeling for a few moments, now direct that joyful feeling back to center of your chest and breathe that love and happiness in and out.

Your brain does what it thinks you want it to do. So if you say to yourself 'I hate getting out of bed early, I'd much rather stay in bed,' then your brain will do everything it can to keep you there.

You can train your brain though by giving it positive messages like 'I love getting up early, I get so many more things done, I feel really good when I get up early'.

It may not feel like it at first but a belief is just a thought you've habitually kept on thinking. So be selective and choose your thoughts wisely and only repeat the ones you really want to turn into habits.

Your brain likes what is familiar so the process of changing or cultivating a new good habit can sometimes feel painful. This is just your body’s way of saying no I don’t like this; I want everything to stay the same so I’m going to fight this change.

I’m in the process of changing the habit of a lifetime in order to become a morning person. I’ve spent years loving my lie ins but I know that I work much better in the mornings and most importantly I feel so much better when I get up early. My body has been fighting this though because I’ve spent years conditioning it to love staying in bed in the morning.

So in order to ease the transition I’m making getting up early in the morning familiar by rewarding myself with a walk in an area of beauty. Instead of forcing myself purely with will power I’m looking for ways to associate getting up early with pleasure instead of forced action.

What ways do you think you could smooth the transition to better and more fulfilling habits?
