Don’t know anything about this design except that it’s perfect—combining two of my favorite sports—reading and bubblebaths. Thoughts?
In the market for 100 kinds of fruit liqueur? How ‘bout 100 kinds of balsamic vinegar? Or 100 kinds of truffle products? Me too!

Full disclosure: Don’t know if this location is real or manipulated. Just that it’s beautiful. Enjoy!

Love this Amber Lewis designed kitchen. I’m a sucker for vaulted ceilings and when you add brick or tile to the mix…gone! Take a scroll through these amazing spaces--including the iconic Grand Central Oyster Bar. The last image is Ellis Island. My Italian grandfather passed through this space and I can’t imagine a more auspicious welcome. Thoughts??? www.jamanproperties.com
Es Devlin. If you don’t know about her, hit the link below and meet the incredible artist who works with light, narrative and nature to create transportive sets for musicians Beyonce, Adele, The Weeknd, U2 and fashion houses like Chanel and Louis Vuitton. These are a few of the environments and effects she created for Beyonce’s Renaissance Tour—like you’re propelled inside a discoball—pinging with excitement and illumination.
As you know, production design plays a big part in our residential design, so just imagine applying Es's thinking to a home. The mind boggles!

Nothing like a shady retreat on a hot summer day… When we purchased First Point, this little playhouse was in such disrepair, everyone insisted it was beyond hope. But with the help of Aldo Rivera, a very talented carpenter, we rehabbed the original bamboo and created a new roof—fabricated by a company that makes grass skirts (that took a bit of convincing!). Because it’s set in the trees, we named it The Treeki Hut and it became everyone’s favorite party destination. On opening night, guests were serenaded by the brilliant harpist, Lara Somogyi seated here, amid the trees. Beyond romantic. www.jamanproperties.com

The late and truly great designer, Sandy Gallin, taught us this trick for making every day and every space…a party. He placed little “bars” all over his homes to allow for all-out-revelry or an intimate tête-à-tête to occur anywhere, any time. And, BTW, a bar doesn’t have to offer alcohol—it can be for juice, icey water by the pool or a bin filled with cold sodas. The point is connection. To share a sip or a slug with someone you love. We created this teeny whiskey tasting station in the primary bathroom of The Riviera White House and, big surprise, when we hosted parties there, everyone ended up…in the bathroom! By the way, if you don’t know Sandy’s work, give him a google. You’ll go nuts. www.jamanproperties.com
Attention musical theatre buffs: If anyone tries to tell you that we are not inspired by our surroundings, show ‘em this—STEVEN SONDHEIM’S workspace. Describing this room is like describing his work: Distinct, cerebral, elegant, restrained, yet emotionally luminous. His townhouse just went on the market this week—next door to Kathryn Hepburn’s. Talk about a tony (Tony) neighborhood!
What to make for dinner when it’s 80 degrees.
Production Design. When you see this credit, it means that pretty much everything you see in a movie or TV show is intentional—the locations, the rooms, the size of the rooms, the shape of the rooms, the color, the contents—down to every item on a desk, every flower in a vase, the books on the shelves. NOTHING is left to chance because everything you see gives cues to the actors, the director and the DP about character and behavior and informs the story. Same goes for houses.
We designed The Riviera White House as a refuge for a power couple. A place that would offer a daily vacation from the kind of relentless work that would, frankly, allow them to be able to afford to live there. But knowing how hard it is to pause the “to do list”, we had to offer the future owners “cues” to guide their behavior—to literally show them how to relax.
The pool. The spa. Goes without saying. But then the ancient olive trees conjure images of Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast. The bamboo pergola is reminiscent of a seaside villa in Greece. Even the gas lanterns harken to a simpler time. All of these visual cues instruct your body and mind to “go on vacation”. Even if just for the day.
Designertip: When production designing your own space (and life!) make a list of your favorite places so you can “cue” yourself to create and inhabit your own best movie.

It’s a wonderful surprise…when you open a book and discover one of your projects was published, without even knowing it had happened. This bedroom is from our very first Jaman--back in 2003--a converted carriage house in Brentwood. The original owner was the “Doctor To The Stars” and, when we cleared out the closets, we found his social calendar, including dinner parties he threw for the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. We refreshed the house for a new generation of Hollywood types and, since then, it’s been owned by an agent, a studio head and multiple producers. Take a look at the second photo—which is how this room looked on our watch—and let us know which version your prefer. Still a favorite project so…thank you for featuring our work!

Used to be that a home’s front yard was a public space you’d hardly notice on your way from the curb to the door. Today, with the emphasis on indoor-outdoor living, why not incorporate that same area for relaxation, entertaining or meditating to the sound of a fountain or the wild parrots living in the palms? The entry courtyard at our last project, First Point, started life as an overgrown, yet exposed space--see the “Before”—it’s a cringer—that we reinvented as an outdoor living room. Protip: All it takes to add all of this living space to a home is a hedge or a fence. Anything from a formal, ficus nitida hedge (you can get trees in boxes that are already 20 ft high!) to a pre-fab panel fence from Home Depot and—voila!—you’ve doubled your living room’s square footage.

Just got this great pic from Waterworks, showing their terrific Highgate fixtures and some fabulous book matched marble. But what really struck me was the bench… The ultimate indulgence isn’t Sitting in a steam room, but Lying Down to take the steam. So, instead of opting for the typical 18” bench, we stretch it out to 30” deep, allowing you to lie comfortably with your arms at your side. That’s the “aaaaaah”!
