On paper the slaves should have been freed when the US Constitution was enacted. Women. Should have had the vote. But white men kept us all enslaved. Women weren't to have many rights until nearly 200 years later. Slaves continue to be kept down and killed for the color of their skin, even after civil war and emancipation proclamation. Even after. Juneteenth. Glad we now have it as righteous holiday. Let US Celebrate liberty as finally acknowledged. Tragedy is that our society has continued to struggle with poverty and the powerful pushing for control. Some people excelled at telling truth to power. Let's continue with truth telling and pushing for justice.
Mary McLeod Bethune, born on this day in 1875, was committed to creating better lives for African Americans.
She was a national adviser to FDR and was president of the National Association of Colored Women.
We still look to her example. Happy Birthday, Mary!
