👋 Meet Julie Mallozzi, director of two New Day titles that capture the depth and breadth of the Asian American experience. “Once Removed” follows Julie as she navigates a quagmire of history and memory during her trip to China to meet her mother’s family after 50-years of separation. “Monkey Dance” is a coming-of-age story of three Cambodia-American teens as they emerge from the shadows of their parents’ Khmer Rouge nightmares.

We are pleased to announce the 2023–2024 recipients of the William Greaves Research & Development Fund: https://firelightmedia.medium.com/firelight-media-announces-recipients-for-the-2023-2024-william-greaves-research-development-fund-d82236c62017

The Greaves R&D Fund supports mid-career documentary filmmakers from racially and ethnically underrepresented communities in the U.S. and Latin America, with a particular emphasis on filmmakers of African descent and/or from Indigenous communities, and comprises grants of $25,000 each to support research and development on a feature-length nonfiction film.

The 2023–2024 grantees include filmmakers from across Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and the United States. Their film projects engage with urgent topics, including the climate crisis, the evolving understanding of gender identity, and the impact of modernization and Western influence on Indigenous communities.
