It’s a fantastic time to enjoy the outdoors this , and we’d like to remind everyone to apply sunscreen and wear UV protective clothing for periods of extended sun exposure. More specifically with regard to heart health, high heat and humidity can significantly increase the risk of , which can lead to cardiac arrest. The best ways to mitigate those risks include avoiding prolonged sun and heat exposure as well as remaining sufficiently hydrated, which can mean drinking more water than usual if you’ve been in the heat.

On this , we'd like to raise awareness beyond our usual scope. Did you know that three quarters of deaths related to cardiovascular disease globally take place in low and middle income countries?

While unhealthy diet and a lack of physical activity are partial factors these countries share with higher income countries, other major reasons driving these deaths include a lack of early detection and treatment for people with risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

We always like to say that knowledge is power, and early detection and/or treatment are the keys to prevention. If you or a loved one are unsure about your cardiovascular health and have the known risk factors for or symptoms of cardiovascular disease (including chest pain, shortness of breath, and weakness or numbness in your arms or legs), be sure to see a cardiologist as soon as possible.

In the world of cardiac health, we're big believers that prevention is supreme. Whether it's a phone call or quality time with your dad, please check in to make sure he's getting regular checkups, blood tests, and (if needed) diagnostic screening in order to get the care or treatment he needs.

Did you know that medical research increasingly indicates that mental health issues, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, are risk factors for cardiovascular disease? Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to bring positivity into your life, including physical exercise, mindfulness and meditation techniques, more quality time with family and friends, and charitable or altruistic actions. Whether the steps you take are big or small, remember that a strong mind means a strong body.

An essential element of cardiac health is a normal blood pressure range, but did you know that high blood pressure affects approximately 47% of adults in the United States? A measurement of 140/90 mm Hg or more is considered high, and a measurement of 180/20 mm HG or more is considered very high or severe. Known as the "silent killer", high blood pressure over an extended period of time can cause long-term damage to arteries that may precede a heart attack or stroke. On this , please be mindful to monitor your blood pressure, especially if you are at risk, and follow up with your cardiologist if treatment is required.

Wishing a very happy retirement to one of the beloved members of our maintenance staff, Jose Velez. A previous recipient of an award given to an employee "with the biggest heart", Jose always walked around with a big smile on his face and an unflinchingly positive attitude towards life. We're sure that Jose will continue to brighten people's days wherever life takes him.

Yesterday, our staff celebrated the birthday of one of our electrophysiologists, Dr. Glenn Dym. A talented vocalist and performer in his spare time, Dr. Dym is a man of many talents!

We were thrilled last weekend to participate in Florida Accountable Care Services's educational event. Florida Cardiology has always been committed to quality patient care, and this was a wonderful opportunity to educate ACO primary care practices on value-based care and how to improve efficiencies across the health care spectrum.

As the saying goes, knowledge is power. Our team was recently trained in using Cigna Healthcare ‘s app, and we can confidently say it will be a tremendous help in serving patients!

Did you know that Black Americans are 30% more likely to die from heart disease than non-Hispanic Whites? Or that Black Americans are disproportionately affected by risk factors like high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes? Early detection and treatment are the keys to prevention, so if you're concerned about a friend or loved one, make sure they get their blood tests done and vital signs examined!

As we celebrate , it's a a great time to remember the importance of staying ! As part of our ongoing campaign to raise awareness for , did you know that all forms of love (romantic, platonic, familial, etc.) can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress, improve your immune system, and protect your heart? Remember that heart health is especially benefited by good relationships, emotions, and overall well-being. When you love others and love yourself, you are potentially saving lives!

The new year is a great time to make resolutions of all kinds, including healthy ones! While many are considering keeping a , some studies have found that light to moderate alcohol consumption may be associated with certain cardiovascular benefits, including lowering the risk of heart disease and raising HDL levels. However, it's been shown repeatedly that heavy, excessive, or binge alcohol consumption is detrimental to the body in many ways, including the cardiovascular system. If you feel you need to reduce your alcohol consumption to healthier levels, remember that your body and heart will thank you!

Did you know that 80% of cardiac events, including premature heart attacks and strokes, are preventable? In fact, heart disease has been the leading cause of death in the United States since 1950. Whether you have a known cardiovascular condition or not, it's a good idea to visit your primary care doctor for an annual wellness visit. Then you can make an informed decision about seeing a cardiologist (on a routine basis if not annually) to screen for a variety of cardiac conditions.
