This week: Backhand Loop Mechanics

A good backhand loop requires a different technique than a backhand counter, pick or roll. Many players confuse the two, and end up with weak backhand loops that break down under pressure.

For a pick, roll or counter, it's usually fine to pivot the stroke around the wrist in a fairly small motion. This works because it allows a fairly fine touch and quick response on shots that depend more on power than spin.

But a solid backhand loop depends on strong spin that can only be generated by the fast racket head speed created from a pivot at the elbow. As a result, the lever moving the racket becomes your full forearm rather than just the hand below the wrist. This longer lever lets you put much more spin on the ball, and more spin gives you a more powerful shot plus a better ability to overcome the spin that may already be on the ball. In a cramped or rushed situation, that spin may also save your stroke from missing altogether, or dribbling something weak back over the net.

Earlier this year, Richard Lee, President of iPong and Glenn Tepper, Deputy CEO of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) met at the Qoros 2015 World Championships in Suzhou. iPong agreed to donate iPong trainer robots to the ITTF Development Program, an initiative that works to promote the sport of table tennis in developing countries.
Last month, at the 11th All Africa Games, iPong trainer robots were given to the twenty-five participating National Table Tennis Associations: Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Congo Brazzaville, Congo Democratic, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Libya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Togo, Tunisia, and Uganda.
Ten additional robots were donated to special projects in Africa, like the Olympic Solidarity Project, a program focused on providing assistance for all the National Olympic Committees (NOCs), particularly those with the greatest needs, through various programs prioritizing athlete development, training of coaches and sports administrators, and promoting the Olympic ideals. This past week, an ITTF/PTT Level One Coach Education Course took place in Lesotho where iPong training robots were used as effective tools in teaching table tennis. iPong hopes that this donation will inspire more people to pick up the sport!
