Why Juneteenth is an important lesson in :

⛓️‍💥June 19, 1865 is the day that the United States liberated all enslaved African Americans in the last Confederate state, 2 yrs after the Emancipation Proclamation. This represents the independence for all Americans.

🖤Declared a Federal holiday on June 17, 2021, businesses are not required to provide employees a paid holiday off but the companies who do make a deliberate statement to acknowledge the significance of this day.

🫶🏾 A Mercer survey found that 9% of surveyed companies planned to observe Juneteenth as a holiday in 2021 — the same percentage as planned to observe Columbus Day/Indigenous People's Day, a long-established federal holiday.

Here are some ways you can acknowledge Juneteenth at your workplace:

⛔️Don’t just “check the box” with polished programming

⛔️Don’t require employees to use PTO to take the day off for observation or worse, deny requested leave

✅ Provide opportunities for employees to share why this day is meaningful in personal ways (ie: Employee Working Group panels, work blogs/articles, social media posts highlighting your staff)

✅ Provide a paid leave day

✅ Put ongoing educational and equitable hiring and retention programs in place frequently and not just on Juneteenth.

1) Give them the ability to take frequent breaks.

2) Give them room to breathe - don’t pile on extra deadlines with unreasonable end of day deliveries.

Extreme Heat Is Endangering U.S. Workers 04/08/2023

Staying cool during the heatwave? There are currently missing labor laws regarding occupational safety and outdoor workers.

“According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 40 workers die every year from heat, most in outdoor jobs like farming, construction, and package delivery. But the official statistics don’t tell the real story, says Doug Parker, director of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which oversees working conditions in the U.S. “We’re confident that’s an undercount. Probably a significant undercount,” largely because the role of heat is often overlooked when it comes to issuing death certificates for cardiac arrest and respiratory failure.”

The messy truth about grief | Nora McInerny 17/11/2022

is something we don’t talk about often at work, if at all. As we head into the holiday season, grief can hit some of us harder than others as we miss loved ones, managing a recent layoff or reflecting on the close of another chapter of our lives. One thing we like to help employers be aware of is the need to create a safe, empathetic space where employees can feel they can be their authentic selves.
