Happy Solstice!

Shortest Day
By Susan Cooper

So the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow‐white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, reveling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us ‐ listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight;
This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
Welcome Yule!

Have a safe and happy holiday!

Juneteenth is a reminder that Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.
Most American’s are familiar with the 4th of July, Independence Day. The day America freed itself from Brittan’s colonial rule. The problem is Enslaved Americans were not free July 4th, 1776, the last Enslaved Americans weren’t free until June 19th, 1865, 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed into law.
For the descendants of American Slaves the 4th of July never meant freedom to us.
In the words of Frederick Douglass “… What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer, a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim” July 5, 1852
This year Juneteenth was recognized as an American Federal Holiday. This recognition shows that the Descendants of Enslaved Americans are indeed an integral part of American history, and our Freedom Day matters just as much as the Nations if not more, because the chains that were shattered were not mearly metaphorical.
Juneteenth is a reminder that nobody’s free until everybody’s free.
Special thank you to Angela J. from North Orlando Oasis for writing this statement!
