The Bearded Purl
Handmade fiber arts items and crafting podcast.
I loved knitting the Sophie Shawl by so much, I immediately cast on another. This one is out of Luxe DK in the Charcoal colorway. It’s the perfect travel knit.
Enjoying some knitting on my Sophie Shawl out of handspun yarn. Sipping away on an oat milk cappuccino after my chiropractor appointment and trying to stay dry in the wet and snowy weather we’re having here today.
Blocking my Lauder Vest by .creabea
An absolutely fabulous pattern that has an option for vest, cardigan, or pullover and with each can be knit a crew or V-neck. This was such a joy to test knit.
I used DK in the Flannel colorway and couldn’t be happier with the yarn and pattern combo!

There is something so satisfying about swatching. As an important part of the garment knitting process, it’s indicative of the characteristics of the pattern, the yarn, and your tension and how they work together (or not!). The relationship between these key three elements can be worth its weight in gold when honed in just right. And let it be known, “just right” doesn’t necessarily always mean the called for gauge in the pattern, but sometimes what feels right for you. Sometimes that requires a little extra math and planning, but what doesn’t in life? Enjoy the process of swatching and learning from it.
With that said, this is a fantastic little taste of what’s to come. The swatch is for the by the ever so creative .creabea
I’m using DK which is a 75/25 BFL Masham blend and couldn’t be more dreamy.
When sweater knitting gets serious…
I often find it’s really helpful to base sweater measurements off of a store bought piece you like the fit of. Just make sure the fabric densities are similar and it’s a great way to take some of the guesswork out of knitting a garment for yourself, besides trying it on along the way if possible.
I’ve officially named 2024 as the year of the sweater! I love wearing them and have plenty of patterns and yarn at the ready so it’s time to get cracking.

Back at the loom working on a special gift project. Reunited and it feels so good 🧶
This community is full of love and support for each other.
We’re constantly listening, learning, supporting, and growing and that’s a beautiful thing. Carrying on handcrafts through generations, honoring those before us and building BETTER for those ahead. It grants us time to slow down and appreciate the beauty in what we’re doing, the craft of what we’re making, and the love and community that we share for each other.
I’ve debated whether or not I was going to say anything as I was not a direct vendor of the event, but rather a booth helper and special guest and don’t want to detract from the importance of the voices needing to be amplified.
I have decided to say a few things. It’s been difficult navigating the complex feelings and emotions of the whole scenario. So please grant grace to those who need it and are struggling with what to say or if the will say anything at all. With that being said, as long as I have a platform I will use it to advocate for and improve the lives of those who need to be heard, for as long as we are able. This platform of ours is as much of an enjoyable space of interaction as it is for advocacy.
Wool & Folk…
Our community showed up for what was surely to be an incredible event full of fiber, great times, music, and food. Accessible and safe for all whom attended, unfortunately this was not the case.
It was overcrowded, unsafe, inadequately setup for vendors who have worked so hard to be there, and inaccessible to so many with disabilities. We as a community know better and must do better. I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart for the experiences had by those attending and those vending. It was disappointing and unacceptable in so many aspects.
At this time has shown the inability to adequately address the situation and make it right for everyone.
So here is what we can do:
Listen to the voices of those speaking up and speaking out, support the vendors who attended the show, support our fiber friends with disabilities, and hold the appropriate individuals accountable. Listen, learn, support, and grow.
Our community is a beautiful gift, ever evolving and growing in ways to make our places in the world a better and more inclusive space for all. We will come out of this stronger than before.
With love, Wooly hugs, and ultimate gratitude,
Caleb
xoxo

Fourth of July picnic in Switzerland!
This year we’ve been thinking of ways to make a positive impact and progressive difference in our community and country back in the US and we hope others are doing the same as a way to celebrate Independence Day. We all should be helping to build a country where all whom dwell have rights and freedoms, not stripping them away.
