Halfway Ranger Station is located 13 miles south of Ely, MN on HWY 1 in the Superior National Forest. The facility occupies a twelve acre parcel of land located directly south of the South Kawishiwi River (direct paddle to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness). Nine of the Field Lab’s twelve buildings were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930’s. K-Lab was listed on

the National Register of Historic Places January 2012 under its historic name Halfway Ranger Station. The historical significance of the buildings relates to their high quality construction workmanship, and representation of various styles of log and framed construction characteristic of an historical era. The Kawishiwi Field Laboratory buildings are managed by the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station (NRS). NRS is seeking to dispose of its buildings at the Kawishiwi Field Laboratory, as NRS itself has not used the buildings for 20 years and does not want to continue supporting the maintenance and utility costs associated with the buildings. The NRS has no need for the buildings and has no plans to rehabilitate them, use them, or provide on-going maintenance. Superior National Forest will retain ownership of the land, regardless of what happens to the buildings. The Station’s primary partner, the Duluth-based Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps, submitted a Feasibility Study January 2013 identifing whether the Kawishiwi Lab can be adapted to meet the organization’s programming needs and, if so, what infrastructure changes would be needed.

“K-Lab is a rare find, conservation corps do not often have the chance to have a permanent facility largely built by the Civilian Conservation Corps,” according to Rolf Hagberg, executive director of the Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps. “This site has great potential to add a unique dimension to our programs that work with youth. The Kawishiwi Lab has a deep history with the CCC and has been at the center of wolf research and fire research that has had a global impact. This place has a pulse.”

SAVE A BEAR🐻! Beginning today, all visitors to the Forest, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, will need to store their food properly to help protect wild bears and humans alike. This food storage order is the result of increases in human-bear interactions with negative outcomes this year.

The food storage order requires visitors to properly store food unless in the process of eating, preparing or transporting food (i.e. bringing fish caught in a nearby lake to a campsite or carrying food down to the beach for a picnic). Proper storage reduces the chance of bears being rewarded when in campsites, trails, portages, landings or other recreational areas.

Proper food storage can be done in two ways:
🐻Using a bear canister or bear-resistant container and placing it 50 feet away from your tent on the ground (preferred method) or;
🐻Hanging your food pack at least 12 feet above the ground at all points, six feet horizontally from any pole or limb and four feet vertically from any pole or limb. Please be mindful of the weight of your pack while hanging it to avoid breaking branches and damaging live trees. A crew will be back at Halfway Ranger Station this week finishing up a window restoration project and working at the Ely Cemetery!

and we are gearing up for Hitch 3! This week crews are headed to Grand Portage National Monument, Voyageurs National Park, and Halfway Ranger Station with a short stopover at the Ely Cemetery!
