Preparing for your backcountry adventure so you have a fun time and come back safe is paramount! Know Before You Go (KBYG) is more than the Scouts' 10 Essentials (which of course you should bring).

It is the planning for your trip and being prepared for contingencies such as weather changes, unexpected injuries, longer-than-expected travel times, and more. Perhaps most important - let someone back home know your plan and they are to call 911 if you don't return at the agreed-upon time.

We're showing some of the 10 essentials LPCSAR members carry with them in the backcountry and will showcase every week this March to prep you for the backcountry.

Today we picture some of the Signaling/communications and navigation items we use.

Take note of the spare batteries for your electronic devices. Devices don't work if there's no power.

Navigation should include both old-school (non-electronic) and electronic. Be effective with both.
