📚 *Struggling with GCSE English Literature? Let's tackle it together!* 📚
Many students often feel overwhelmed by the number of quotations they need to remember or the complex texts they’re studying
What parents should keep in mind is that your child is actually preparing for *two separate GCSEs: English Literature *and English Language.
🔎 While mastering quotes and set texts is important, *English Language* is arguably the more critical of the two - this is the one where they need to achieve at least a Grade 4 to avoid the dreaded resit.
So what can we do?
- We take a balanced approach to both subjects. For some students, it might even be best to focus on English Language first to build a strong foundation.
🎯 We’re here to support your child in both areas, tailoring our approach to their specific needs.

Trying to remember the characters in the set texts can be problematic...
Many students find it challenging to remember key quotations and fully grasp the depth of characters in their set texts, like An Inspector Calls.
Without a strong vocabulary and a solid understanding of the characters, it’s tough to write those high-scoring essays.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. To help your child succeed, I’ve created a *FREE Word Wheel* focused on one of the key characters from An Inspector Calls.
This resource is designed to help them master character analysis and remember essential quotations with ease.

Finding Gratitude...
A few weeks ago, I started a simple yet powerful practice—journaling three things I'm grateful for at the end of each day.
Sometimes they're big things, but more often, they’re the small, everyday moments that bring a smile to my face.
It could be something as sweet as having coffee and cake with my daughter, doing a really nice food shop at Sainsbury's, or just getting out for a walk with the dogs. These little things add up, and they help me frame the day in a positive light.
Even on days that feel tough, taking a moment to acknowledge what I’m thankful for shifts my perspective and lifts my spirits. It's amazing how something so simple can have such a profound impact on your mindset.
If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend giving it a go. Gratitude really does have the power to turn even the hardest days into something special. 🌟

As a parent who has used tutors myself, I know that seeking tuition for your child is a real financial consideration. It takes time to do your homework and get it right.
As some of my students take a break over the summer, I have some free time and therefore I would like to offer you the opportunity to book a free meeting with myself to discuss if I would be a right match to support your child on their English journey.

The Journey of HWL English Tuition: Growth beyond expectation
So yesterday, you found out all about the reasons why HWL English Tuition began.
Today, I want to share with you just how much we’ve grown since 2022—and why a name change might even be on the horizon!
What started as a small tuition service has blossomed into a diverse team of expert tutors. We now offer top-notch support not just in English, but also in Maths, Chemistry, and more. Our range covers everything from Key Stage 1 all the way up to A Levels.
But that’s not all! We’ve also expanded to include specialists for 11 Plus entrance exams, and I’m thrilled to have a highly skilled Lamda tutor on board, who excels across all Lamda disciplines and helps students secure spots in top drama schools.
From a one-person operation, HWL English Tuition has grown into a network of talented tutors who work with students across the UK—and even internationally. The journey has been incredible, and I can’t wait to see where we go from here!
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to evolve and expand our horizons. 🌟
My student really struggled with an extract today so I found some images that related to key events and then he found the corresponding quotations.
There are so many things here that relate to education too.

🌟 Why I Started HWL English Tuition 🌍
Teaching has always been my passion.
I began my journey in 2000, following a traditional path to middle and senior leadership roles. For 10 years, I taught in a Pupil Referral Unit, where I focused on the transition from being a good teacher to becoming an outstanding one and finished there as English Lead.
Throughout my career, I always tutored on the side (I needed to initially to keep my daughter in private education) and I remember the days before COVID, driving around the same estate with bags full of folders and resources, teaching around seven students one after the other.
But in 2022, something shifted.
Turning the wrong side of 40 made me reassess my life, and I realised I wanted more. I wasn't entirely pleased with the hoops I was being asked to jump through in traditional education settings. That’s when HWL English Tuition, once my side hustle, became my full-time business.
Now, instead of driving from student to student, I teach students across the world—all online! I also contract work out to other tutors, expanding our reach and impact. What started as a way to supplement my teaching career has blossomed into a thriving, full-time business, allowing me to focus on what truly matters: empowering students to achieve their best in GCSE English.
😊If you have joined my email list in the past 24 hours and you would like a copy of the Macbeth resource, please pop a yes 👇
I have a scheduled email with the resource out to parents this morning and I want to make sure that I don't miss any new parents.
🚨 Confession Time! 🚨
Last night, we ordered Chinese food, and my daughter didn't even need to ask what I'd be having. She just looked at me and said, "Chicken curry and egg fried rice, right?"
Apparently, I'm so predictable that even my takeaway choices have become legendary in our household. 😅
Who needs change when you’ve already found perfection, right? 😂
But seriously, is anyone else out there as resistant to change as I am? Or am I the only one sticking to my tried and trusted favorites? Let’s hear your go-to orders (and maybe a bit of solidarity)!
There's more evidence from me in the comments.
We have a winner. 🏆

How do you engage students?
I believe in a tailored approach to help students excel in GCSE English. Here’s how I ensure every learner is engaged and empowered:
📖 Shared Reading: I start with shared reading sessions, designed to promote fluent reading and introduce students to new vocabulary, fostering a deep understanding of the text.
📝 Modelled Practice: I demonstrate key skills and techniques, guiding students step-by-step to master the essentials.
💻 Independent Work + Instant Feedback: Students then apply what they’ve learned independently, with immediate feedback to reinforce understanding and correct any mistakes.
🔝 Clear Steps for Progression: I lay out a clear path for success, helping students track their progress and achieve their academic goals.

🌍 **Unlock the Power of Collaborative Learning!** 🌍
Parents often worry that their child might be too shy to speak up in a group, too nervous to turn on their cameras, or hesitant to participate in a virtual setting.
But here’s the magic: students in my group sessions learn from each other**—and not just from those in their own classroom, but from peers around the world! 🌟
In my online group sessions, students gain confidence as they observe and interact with their peers. They naturally pick up new skills, ideas, and strategies by simply working with others—often without even realising it!
The diversity of perspectives and experiences from students in different schools and countries creates a rich environment for growth and learning.
📚 **Collaborative learning** is at the heart of what I do, and it's the key to making these sessions so effective. When students see others just like them asking questions, sharing ideas, and making mistakes, they realise they can do it too!
Take this picture from the recent Olympics, for example. It shows a Chinese gymnast copying and learning from her peers—a perfect illustration of what collaborative learning is all about. Just like these athletes, students can learn and grow by watching and interacting with one another. 🏅
