Tiger Debate competed at Newton High School on Saturday. The two teams competed against 20 other schools at the largest competition so far this season. Here are the results:

Sam Peters/Alessia Carrales— 4-0, 1st place in Open (the highest division), beating out 20 other teams. This tournament completes their state qualification for the 2-speaker debate tournament in January. (Although they plan to try for the 4-speaker tournament through regional competition.)

Eli Kimbrough/Vera Hallman—2-2, 14th place in Novice with a 4th place speaker award for Kimbrough. A solid placing for a novice team competing at an extremely competitive tournament!

Tiger Debate and Forensics is looking for “storytellers” for its fundraiser in November.

It all started at the NSDA national tournament in June when the team had the opportunity to watch an event hosted by the Des Moines Register. The event was called “The Storytellers Project,” and it featured local people telling their stories based around the theme of “travel.” Stories ranged from a camping trip gone wrong--that taught an important lesson--to a reporter who visited Ukraine during the current conflict. There was even a lady with MS who shared about her trip to Paris and how it changed her life when she was younger. This sparked a discussion among the students about how we, as a community, share our stories and how important oral histories are. The competitors came home with the goal of creating an event where Clay County residents can share their stories with one another.

The event the competitors watched in Des Moines recruited normal people who were partnered with writers from the newspaper who acted as “coaches” to the speakers. The debate and forensics competitors are doing the same. Anyone who volunteers to be a storyteller will be partnered with a competitor who will help them write their speech and prepare their performance.

The theme the students have selected is “Home.” They’re hoping for storytellers highlighting what makes Clay County a home to so many. The team is partnering with The Rex Theatre, where the community will purchase tickets and attend the event, which is being held on November 24th at 2:30 pm.

If you’re interested in being a speaker, please fill out this google form (https://forms.gle/5iYU4CJAVLBgTzSd7) and a representative from Tiger Debate and Forensics will be in contact with you soon! There’s also a place on the form to make suggestions of speakers as well. Be sure you share contact information so the team can reach out!
