Macro Micro Dundee

This years Masters Unit is working on a live research project to develop low energy design for affordable rural housing on the peninsula of Knoydart

MacroMicro investigates themes relating to the architecture of dwelling; sustainable communi ties; rural typologies; form and identity. We use the term sustainability to mean the integration of low energy spatial confi gurations with specifi c site conditions, appropriate construction tech niques and material practices. Research into existing social, political, physical and technological conditions

In the last few months we've been extra busy (sorry for the silence). We made a second study trip to Knoydart, where we presented the work to date to the clients.

Macro micro as a unit have focused on three particular sites in Knoydart for development.

The Forest site - a clear felling site on a steep slope over looking the Loch.
The Manitoba - an existing semi-detached building within a small cluster of residential buildings
and
The Net shed - a dilapidated shed within a tight cluster of existing buildings.

On Monday, we welcomed Malcolm Fraser - a well-established Scottish Architect - to visit the Macro Micro studio.

We started the morning presenting a summary of our research and analysis, then moved onto site strategies early afternoon.

It was beneficial to have Malcolm's input at this stage of our project given his experience of the West coast and in the wider context of architectural design within Scotland.

Here's a little snippet of the sites we're working on.

Although, all development is on hold as we prepare to take on Switzerland, Germany and Austria in the coming days.

It's been busy busy in the Macro Micro Studio since our return from Knoydart.

This week we've been making great progress with the start of strategies. So far, the four sites are very different and all pose very particular challenges.

It's safe to say we're all excited about starting to design, Monday marks our first review, presenting our findings to studio tutors as well as guest architect, Malcolm Fraser.

Keep your eyes peeled for sneak peeks of the work before then on our Instagram:
