Great news! California's Governor just signed an historic law on Monday protecting LGBTQ+ students from being forcefully outed to their guardians by school teachers. Some ultra conservative school boards around the country have been proposing and passing these laws in an attempt to create a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ kids at school. California is the first to stand up for LGBTQ+ kids against this kind of hate. Of course, legal challenges are already being filed. But we will stand firm. LGBTQ+ Merced added our voices to a Patterson school board meeting in recent months, where the hateful measure was voted DOWN. ๐ŸŒˆ ๐ŸŒˆ

Today is an international celebration of non-binary people. Non-binary people can identify as either transgender or cisgender. They can use a variety of pronouns, including he, she, they, xe, em, it, and more. It is polite to ask if you are unsure or are meeting someone new. Putting your pronouns on your badge or email signature at work signals a culture of inclusivity, and can embolden others to display theirs. Using they/them as a singular pronoun is part of the English language, even if you are unused to hearing it. "If you love somebody, set them free." ๐ŸŒˆ ๐ŸŒˆ

In June of 2019 and 2021, our founders organized and curated the first two major group LGBTQ+ art exhibitions at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center - the MAC! Both floors of galleries were filled with the art of local LGBTQ+ artists, and ONLY LGBTQ+ artists! The first included the largest showing of trans-identified artists ever assembled in the state at the time. There were those in the community who were afraid of pushback, straight protests, and even vandalism. But none of these things occurred. Instead, we heard nothing but love and appreciation for all of our wonderful artists, and the exhibitions showed that Merced is indeed ready for inclusiveness and representation! We look forward to future collaboration on art and culture events of our area!

Happy ๐ŸŒˆ !!

A few weeks ago, LGBTQ Merced was excited to be invited to participate in a leadership roundtable put together by the California Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria. Participants from across the 27th District included Cal Pride Valle Central, BlaQueer, Planned Parenthood, UC Merced including the Community and Labor Center, and the new HEARTS club- an LGBTQ+ org within Merced College.

This roundtable was proof that many organizations can come together in solidarity and common purpose. Assemblywoman requested that the group meet again to discuss and decide upon 3 common goals related to the health and equity of LGBTQ+ people in the Central Valley. We are thrilled to be a part of such a discussion, and are very much looking forward to this, and many other organizing projects that we are currently working on.

Last Saturday, two men attempted (and failed) to cut down the pride flag in Bob Hart Square. As of today, both of these individuals seem to have been identified and ARRESTED! We hope the local justice system will prosecute this as the blatant hate crime it appears to be!

Despite the attempt to tear it down though, the pride flag will continue to wave proudly over Merced!!
