Okay, so...43 years on Dec. 8, 1980 Mark David Chapman shot and ultimately killed John Lennon. I was 16 years old. A major Beatles fan really back when I saw A Hard Day's Night on TV. I think I was 10. There is a reason their latest single Then and Now is a hit. We will not see their like again.

So, before school one day, my friend Tim (who would also die far too young) comes up to me and says, "I'm so sorry. It must be such a shock."

Now, bear in mind, I've had a sleep issue...well most of my life. And I believe on the 8th of Dec. 1980, I attempted to go to be in bed 10. Something I remain woefully unsuccessful of to this day.

I was not watching TV when Howard Cosell made that terrible announcement during some football game that went into overtime. (To Cosell's credit, having met Lennon, he didn't make this announcement lightly).

So I found out the next day, from my beloved friend Tim who loved me enough to worry that I might be heartbroken. He was correct. The problem was, the fact that John Lennon was gunned down the night before seemed so surreal that I thought Tim was teasing me. How far could he lead me to believe?

My skeptical ass wouldn't buy it. It was surreal. It didn't happen back then. So Tim had to take me to the high school library where I was able to see the horrible headline of the Chicago Sun-Times.

I remember my stunned response was, "Well, I guess there won't be a Beatles reunion now."

Again...black humor.

I wandered around the rest of the day in shock. Some kids wore black arm bands. There was an underlying level of WTF that followed us the rest of the day. I remember calling my mom when I got the chance (before cell phones, so I actually had to go to a pay phone) and to her credit, knowing how infected I was with Beatlemania, she asked if I was okay. Did I want to come home?

Considering how much I hated high school and every minute of every day I wanted to come home (which said a lot since I would be returning to an alcoholic home), this day I declined. The day was almost over.

But once I got home, I put on the local radio station (WLS) and curled up in bed listening to the weirdness of it all. Crying. Of course I didn't know the man. Didn't even meet him. But the nature of the beast with Beatlemania was that everyone knew him none the less. And the sort of action of Mark David Chapman going up to Lennon, asking him to sign an autograph, then shooting him was something that didn't happen.

It's hard to understand the shock when looking back from a world where kids are shot in grade school at a distressingly familiar level.

Back in 1980, this wasn't a thing. Back in 1980, a star could sign an autograph for a fan without expecting to have a bullet through the chest a few seconds later. Mark David Chapman changed all that.

The dream is over.

It would be interesting what Lennon would think of the past few decades. I think he himself still had a lot of healing to do before he died (he was a complicated guy), though I'm grateful that he was at last becomming the healthy person he could be.

But of course, that's ultimately the most difficult thing about death. Wondering what might have been but for the death. Whether it be the death of a parent, sibling, friend, etc: wondering what might have been were it not for can haunt you.

When is all said and done, we have only bits and pieces to hold to us. For John, of course, it is his music. Progressive, challenging, introspective, triumphant.
