Long silence on this group , but no silence in the field.
In Februari we had the amphibian monitoring in Spain. Finally , After many sad dry years, we had water in nearly all sites again.
The spring in SW Spain is exploding. Some autumn spawns of Pelobates have developed in large tadpoles. Pelodytes is calling and spawning in many sites that had been dry most of the years and from earlier spawns the larvae are still in the water. With the late winter rains the streams are a bit washed out , meaning not too many Alytes larvae have survived this winter, but some have found a peaceful corner to survive. Discoglossus is spawning and has some small larvae swimming around. Pleurodeles are aroundnin all life stage too!
About two weeks before the monitoring calamita and pelobates had been spawning in many temporary waters, and thus many larvae swimming around in February. The hylas were just starting.
Also noticable were many sites that had had few water in the past years, but now with many pygmaeus or boscai adults, while the first Salamandras are going into metamorfosis (the one on the picture had left the water already, while still having small guils).
What a beautiful, and what a joy to share this with so many entusiastas field persons!
It was again a succes and with low impact on the sites thanks to over 60 participants and guides sampling day and night nearly 100 sites in small groups.
We are preparing the spring survey now in spain, and the Poland survey 16-20 May too.

🐸... after a long wait... it seems that in 2023 the game is back on! 17-19 February 2023... EPMAC SPAIN! More to follow.
