“Warriors Know Politeness is Not a Sign of Weakness”
- Alain Burrese
Politeness. Things like saying “please” and “thank you.” Saying “excuse me” and acknowledging other people in a courteous way. Simple manners, but to many they have become notions that people believe are signs of weakness. This could not be further from the truth.
Throughout history, especially within the warrior class, politeness has been a requisite to maintain order within the various segments of societies. But more importantly, to those who live with the Warrior's Edge, it denotes self-respect based on self-esteem.
Being polite is about respect and being considerate of people's feelings, culture, and values. It is the opposite of being rude and boorish. It also goes a long way toward preventing violence. There's a reason I included the lesson “Be Nice” in both my book “How To Protect Yourself By Developing A Fighter's Mindset” and my DVD “Restraint, Control & Come-A-Long Techniques.” It really is an important principle to help keep you safe and to help make people comply with what you need them to do when working security or law enforcement positions.
Being polite will cause others to respect you more. Rather than trying to impress with strength or martial skills, politeness will earn the warrior even more respect. And maybe most important as we work at developing ourselves, being polite will make you feel better about yourself because you've behaved in a good and reasonable manner.
