Heartworm Disease…it’s REAL! By Alice Jeromin, B.S. Pharmacy, DVM, DACVD
Heartworm prevention…DO IT!!
Heartworm disease in dogs and cats is REAL no matter where you live or what season it is. Sadly, more cases of heartworm in dogs are being diagnosed today than were seen 10-20 years ago.
Heartworm disease is not a gastrointestinal worm like some people incorrectly think. Carried by mosquitos that bite your pet and infects the pet’s bloodstream, it causes foot-long worms (heartworms) to grow and live in the heart, lungs, and other organs.
This disease affects dogs, cats, ferrets and other mammals such as foxes, coyotes, and wolves. With more coyotes living in urban areas and shelter pets relocating from heartworm prone areas, this disease is on the rise. Currently 1 million dogs have heartworm disease and THIS DISEASE IS TOTALLY PREVENTABLE for a monthly cost of what you’re paying for your latte!
Even if a pet is indoors, such as indoor cats or apartment dogs, heartworm disease can affect them since mosquitos which carry the disease are present all year round. It just takes 1 bite from 1 heartworm carrying mosquito to render your pet affected! In 1 study when a heartworm positive animal is identified in an area, 75% of the mosquitos in that region were found positive for carrying the disease ready to infect other pets.
Cats can also be affected by heartworm and for them, there is no cure so prevention is the key!
Please keep your pet on heartworm preventative all year round and be sure and have them tested yearly even though they’re on a preventative (some resistance to preventative drugs is being seen in spotty areas in the south). Various preventatives are available from monthly pills or topicals to an every 6- or 12-month injection. PREVENTION IS THE KEY BECAUSE ONCE A DOG IS HEARTWORM POSITIVE, THE TREATMENT IS NOT ONLY SERIOUS WITH POTENTIAL ADVERSE EFFECTS BUT ALSO EXPENSIVE. PREVENTION IS THE KEY!
