Did you know.... cement production creates about 7 percent of the world’s C02 emissions and is the largest contributor to embodied carbon in the built environment? However, structural engineers have strategies available to reduce the embodied carbon footprint of concrete by 14 – 33 percent, a low- to no-cost premium, according to a 2021 report. COME LEARN MORE about what structural engineers are doing, and what can still be done, at the Fall Forum on 11/30! Register today! (image courtesy KPFF Seattle)

Members of SEAW attended the WASafe Building Safety Evaluator Training at the WABO Conference in Lynnwood, WA, on March 21, 2022. Present were Tim Nordstrom, P.E., S.E., of Tacoma Power, Darrell Staaleson, P.E., S.E., of Staaleson Engineering, P.C., Kai Ki Mow, P.E., S.E., of Seattle Building Dept., and Joyce Lem, P.E., S.E., Chair of the Disaster Preparedness committee. The class was well taught by Erik Bishop, P.E. of Reid-Middleton.
Presentations were geared to understanding the key indicators for making a rapid safety assessment screening and finding a balance between safety, the objectives of sheltering in place, and the need to keep doors of business open. SEAW members peppered the presenters with questions on resilience, liability, and the assessment of buildings on the boundary between a yellow tag and a red tag. Joyce Lem clarified several topics including the requirements for engineers to have protection under the Good-Samaritan Law and the scope and limitations of our duties during post-disaster evaluation.
SEFW has a mission to promote structural engineering careers (particularly among high school students) and is pleased to be a sponsor partner with ASCE for the 2022 Popsicle Stick Bridge competition. The event broadcasts live tomorrow, March 19, starting at 9AM. Check it out! This will be the second (and hopefully last year) of the event being virtual, and it is a fun time!

Did you know the 2013 renovation of UW Husky Stadium used 7,500 tons of structural steel? How much steel is that exactly? Well, imagine the entire student body at UW (47,500 people) were all 320-pound defensive linemen... all together they would weigh about as much as the structural steel in the stadium. Wow! Be sure to join us in person or tune in online on WEDNESDAY for the Fall Forum to learn more about the renovation project! sefw.org
We hope you're planning to attend, either in person or virtually! Register at sefw.org today to hear all about this process!
Did you know the iconic Washington Pavilion > Seattle Coliseum > KeyArena > Climate Pledge Arena roof, which was maintained, lifted, and suspended in air while a massive renovation project took place at and below grade, weighs 44 million pounds?! That’s the same weight as 109 Boeing 747-800 jets. Come hear all about the process from the structural engineers themselves on 11/17 at the Forum!
