Wherever I live and work, Latvia will always remain a very special place for me. My upbringing, family and the many friendships, whether new or old, are there.
Receiving not one, but TWO design awards and so many compliments and acknowledgments from supporting people - that means a lot to me.

Spread between three countries, (Un)woven (previously Pre-Loved) would have not been possible without the support of strong women who were and are there along every step on the way.
, ar tevi šis sākās ❤️ Vislabākā partnere sapņu kalnu iekarošanai.
, the mastermind of bringing colour to our material. I enjoy all our laughters and co-creation!

Thank you for the honour, the jury for the hard work and countless debates .regina .apsite

, paldies par naudas balvu!
for orchestrating a beautiful event and experience!
and for the beautiful award designs

I still float on cloud nine, and I think I’ll linger here a while longer 🎈🌥️

PINESKINS

PineSkins is a versatile, leather-like material made of inner bark of pine trees, a by-product of the tree cutting industry. Ranging from earthy brown to pink,
deep terracotta to ash-grey and a scent of wood, PineSkins carries a unique appearance that feels familiar yet unseen.

Textural denim finds of 2023 🧵

Photos from Studio Sarmite's post 15/11/2023

Working on generational design and speculating how materials change and transform at the end of their life has always been an intrigue of mine. I was really happy about the possibility to scale up my previous recycled denim research to create these biotextiles drapes made of Levi’s denim waste and recycled dye.

Different hues of ocean blues beautifully reflected the incoming sunlight.
More to come 💙

Dutch Design Week 2023

The Visionary Lab invited 8 designers and artists to breathe new life into pre-used Vitra chairs with repurposed denim from Levi’s®. These unique chairs will be exhibited during Dutch Design Week in a spacious, ‘raw’ warehouse - originally a woodworker atelier.
Honoured to have been among the 8 artists to design on the iconic Verner Panton chair using Pre-Loved biotextile recipe made from Levi’s post production denim fibres.

Its been a blast to be involved in the making and baking of the beautiful summer program “Future of Life”.
43 students and recent graduates came from 13 different countries to Karlsruhe to dive in the topic of Elementals. From the alchemical four-element doctrine to biological atomism and microspheres to macrocosmic forces beyond human imagination. was explored during hands-on workshops, guided field trips, evening lectures and panel talks.
It’s been magical to meet all and each of yo! 🥲 🙌

Happy memories of recent Sustainable Innovations show at Munich Fabric Start.
and me were aproached to bring our creative process to the fair and cook some natural pigments and biotextiles. Besides various textile scraps, natural polymers and pigments we brought, what seemed like, half of Rouas Atelier.
We had lots of fun, interesting and provoking conversations about fashion, materials, waste and our collaboration. We showed our recent Pre-Loved collaboration by and the generational colour palette. And of course cooked a few future ideas to come 😉🎨

Thank you for making this possible. Thank you for the beautiful experience!

CREATING BIOTEXTILES FROM TEXTILE WASTE - Online course

Excited to collaborate with for an online course about biotextiles 🫶

This 4-session course will shift the perspective of sustainability to one of the most polluting industries – textiles. We will look at the various processes within the textile industry that cause waste, learn about different waste streams, environmental issues, and dependencies, and question what new forms of sustainability can emerge. In parallel, you will create multiple biotextile concepts and develop experimental processes using various textile wastes local to your environment and natural binders.

DETAILS:
• June 22 - July 20
• Intro session + four hands-on sessions
• Every Thursday at 18:00 CEST
• All sessions are live and will be recorded and shared with participants

For more detailed information please visit link in bio or DM me

The Many lives of Textiles: A research on colour separated post-consumer fibres. Diving into the depths of a single colour ✨yellow✨ and translating it into a marble-like colour palette.

Waste does not have a single tone. Instead it mesmerises with depths and patterns that create a complexity visible once looked closer at.

The Many Lives of Textiles is part of a larger project investigating various waste streams from the textile industry. Post-consumer garments, production waste, fibres, dust and even dye waste are seen as a resource for the creation of new material concepts.

This project was supported by Worth Partnership Project and was on show at Milan Design Week

Currently on show at Material District Utrecht, March 8-10th

The first findings of the ongoing research project The Many Lives of Colour presented at Yksi Expo during Dutch Design Week 2022. The project has been commissioned by Small But Perfect, Impact Hub Lisbon and Fashion Revolution.

In order to remove the existing stigma of recycled textiles, Studio Sarmite collaborates with Roua Atelier to develop a pioneering dyeing method for mixed blends with help of natural pigments. The dyeing is integrated within the making of the bio-textile thus leading to a unique design language. The dyeing becomes the designing, which gives room for surprising patterns and playfulness.
In addition, both designers learned that the colour can be extracted during the recycling process of the bio-textile and altered for the next lifecycle without adding additional resources.

What a year, 2022 ✨

One of my biggest highlight in 2022 was the curation of “Future Of Life” speculative design summer program together with the amazing at the .

I had the honour to put together a unique program and invite renowned designers such as .g.jones , , , , , , , and Shrikrishnan Sankaran.

40 graduates and young designers from 12 different countries created probable, plausible and speculative future narratives of cohabitation. From future material mining to terrestrial designing, from building materials to settling on different planets - a bio-circular system was formed by the end of the program.
