The more clearly we see things as they are, the more we're able to open our hearts toward other beings. When we recognize that others experience pain and unhappiness because they don't recognize their real nature, we're moved by a profound wish for them to experience the same sense of peace and clarity that we have begun to know.

Rest in the River 07/04/2018

The problem is that not many of us know how to allow our body and mind to rest. We are always struggling; struggling has become a kind of habit. We cannot resist being active, struggling all the time. We struggle even during our sleep.

It is very important to realize that we have the habit energy of struggling. We have to be able to recognize a habit when it manifests itself because if we know how to recognize our habit, it will lose its energy and will not be able to push us anymore.

Waking Up to Your World 28/03/2018

So, what is the most important thing to do with each day? With each morning, each afternoon, each evening? It is to leave a gap. It doesn’t matter whether you are practicing meditation or working, there is an underlying continuity. These gaps, these punctuations, are like poking holes in the clouds, poking holes in the cocoon. And these gaps can extend so that they can permeate your entire life, so that the continuity is no longer the continuity of discursive thought but rather one continual gap. Pema Chödrön

How To Rewire Your Brain For Happiness 04/03/2018

Practicing self-compassion is one powerful way to start building these new pathways in your brain. Another tool is to begin cultivating gratitude – you can do this by journaling about things you’re grateful for or by simply sharing, out loud, three things you’re grateful for with someone – your partner or friends – at the end of each day.

How To Rewire Your Brain For Happiness Is happiness something we can cultivate or is it a result of our environment? New scientific research is shedding light on the answer, and the results are encouraging. Imagine your brain has all these neural pathways connecting different responses. We watched this at the Group Meditation session yesterday.

In this short teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche explains the essence of meditation and how it is different from the passing experiences that happen when we meditate. These two can easily be mixed up. We often judge how well our practice is going by looking to our experience, but this is not always helpful. Rather than focusing on fleeting experiences, Mingyur Rinpoche shows us how to focus on the most important point, namely, the essence of meditation itself.

Well-being and happiness can be learned – here’s how 10/01/2018

"Though the science is still very new, there is compelling evidence to suggest that we can learn healthy habits of mind that contribute to increased well-being. Scientific and medical research is showing that well-being practices like meditation can alter the brain and body in ways we’re just beginning to measure and understand, including how these practices shape the anatomy of our brains and our immune and genetic responses to stress."

This recent article by Richard Davidson of Center for Healthy Minds and Tergar Madison includes tips for starting a meditation practice, and there's a video by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche featured on the page. Enjoy!

Power of Group Meditation

In every wisdom tradition, meditation hasn’t been just a way to seek inner knowledge. It has the potential to transform the world. Research on the power of group meditation has been ongoing for several decades, and the results seem to validate what the ancient sages said, that there is greater peace in the vicinity of the enlightened. Individually we may not see ourselves as enlightened, but the group effect multiplies each single member.

But any group effect will only be effective if the people who join it feel that they’ve gained something more than they can achieve at home alone. Fortunately, meditators in groups often report that they feel less alone and more connected to others. Their practice feels deeper, tapping into a more profound silence than they experience on their own.
