Favorite WDW Attraction Exits!

You’ve blasted your way across the cosmos, survived your encounter with 999 happy haunts, and discovered your future with the help of some innovative technology. So now it’s off to the next attraction, or for some of us, a much-needed helping of funnel cake. But wait, why are you in such a hurry? Just because the attraction is over doesn’t mean the experience is too. And thus we arrive at one of the great overlooked features of Walt Disney World: the magic of the attraction exits. We’ll spend this week exploring some of our favorites, and we'll begin our journey over in Liberty Square...

1. The Haunted Mansion
Take some time to look around as you exit the foreboding Gothic structure. To the left you’ll find a mausoleum, and upon further examination you’ll discover a treasure trove of pun-filled inscriptions. Say a few out loud if you can’t figure them out! Continuing on, you’ll soon come across the Pet Cemetery. The gravestones are a bit further back and positioned a bit higher than their counterparts that stand guard at the Mansion’s entrance, but they are just as much fun to study. For the keen-eyed among you, look all the way back to the left and see if you can spot the tombstone of Mr. Toad, a one-time resident of Fantasyland. During Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, the Pet Cemetery takes on a whole new aura, with black lights illuminating the cryptic memorials and ominous fog slowly cascading down the hillside. Even as you finally exit, take a peek on the ground and see if you can spot the horseshoe prints in the concrete. Memories of the Headless Horseman? Or the ghostly tracks of the bearer of the morbid hearse that sits nearby?

Today we wrap up our time-travel tour of DinoLand U.S.A. with a couple of fun secrets from this prehistoric land!

9. Pass the Ketchup!
If you get an opportunity to get one last ride on DINOSAUR, keep your eyes open in the queue and see if you can spot the red, white, and yellow pipes overhead. They feature the chemical formulas for ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard and are a reference to McDonalds’ early sponsorship of the land. You could find another nod to McDonalds inside Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures. As you wandered around the store, you could have seen a McDonald’s bag!

10. That’s an Odd Route Number…
As you wander about Dino-Rama, check out the road sign that says DIGGS COUNTY • US 498. That’s a reference to the opening date of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, April 1998.

Finally, a mystery photo! Can you tell where in DinoLand the last image was taken?

That's it for our tour of DinoLand! Let us know, what is YOUR favorite memory of this prehistoric playground? Tell us in the comments!

We're continuing our time-travel tour of DinoLand U.S.A. as we explore more of the history and fun facts of this prehistoric land!

7. Who is Sue?
Here you’ll also find a life-sized Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton…this is DinoSue! It sure looks real, but the skeleton you see in DinoLand is an exact replica of a Tyrannosaurus rex that was discovered in South Dakota and whose skeleton is on display at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. But why is she named Sue? Actually, scientists don’t know if Sue was a boy or a girl. It turns out that she wasn’t named Sue because she was a girl; she was named Sue in honor of her discoverer, Susan Hendrickson. It’s only for convenience’s sake that Sue is referred to as a “she.”

When Hendrickson and her team were finishing up a dig in South Dakota, she decided to go for a walk with her golden retriever, Gypsy. She wanted to take one last look at a canyon wall that had piqued her interest, and was surprised to find a few bone fragments lying on the ground. Thinking they had fallen down the canyon wall, she looked up and saw more bones sticking out about eight feet above her head. She gathered the remaining members of the crew, and they started to meticulously dig out the mysterious skeleton. They soon realized that they had made a tremendous discovery, the remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex!

8. Start the Countdown!
The DINOSAUR attraction was originally called Countdown to Extinction when it opened with the park in 1998. On May 1, 2000, the name was changed to DINOSAUR to coincide with the release of the film Dinosaur. The movie told the story of a young Iguanodon named Aladar. The Animal Kingdom attraction has a large sculpture of an Iguanodon at its entrance, and a plaque was added indicating that this was indeed Aladar! The attraction had previously been more focused on your encounter with the fearsome Carnotaurus, but was revamped slightly so that now your adventure focused on retrieving an Iguanodon (before the asteroid hits!).

We're continuing our time-travel tour of DinoLand U.S.A. as we explore more of the history and fun facts of this prehistoric land!

5. Cementosaurus
You know the tall, green dinosaur that looms over the entrance with that mischievous smirk on his face? That’s Cementosaurus! He’s a Concretodorian, and you may remember that he was yellow for several years. He was painted green when Rivers of Light opened in 2017 to help him better camouflage with the trees surrounding Dino-Rama.

6. Mr. Imagination
As you make your way toward Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures, look at the dinosaur sculpture on the side of the roadway just outside the store. The whimsical sculpture was created by the late American folk artist Gregory Warmack (aka, Mr. Imagination), who used all-natural materials to create the jagged look of the piece. Here you’ll find one of the tiniest Hidden Mickeys in Walt Disney World – you might want to get out your reading glasses. The Mickey can be found on a Cast Member pin incorporated into the sculpture.

3. Need Some Dino Souvenirs?
Continuing on with the backstory of Chester and Hester, the pair transformed their original gas station into Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures and featured a variety of kitschy dinosaur-themed souvenirs the pair had collected over the years. This included Sinclair Mold-A-Rama dinosaurs and even a photo of the happy couple.

4. Step Right Up!
No roadside carnival would be complete without games, and you’ll find plenty at Chester & Hester’s to test your skill. You can try some Skee-Ball at Mammoth Marathon or show off your basketball prowess at Brontoscore. Comet Crasher, the ball toss game, is the only game of luck in Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama, but that is not to say that it’s rigged. Plenty of folks walk away with the big prize, and if you’ve won a couple of smaller prizes, you can ask the Cast Members about trading up! Fans of Whack-a-Mole can test their mallet-mashing skills at Whack-A-Pachycephalosaur. Why a Pachycephalosaur? The real Pachycephalosaur was 15 feet long, weighed 900 pounds, and boasted a 10-inch thick skull. This was useful for head-butting, though, at Chester & Hester’s, it provide excellent protection from hammer-wielding Guests!

One of the most thrilling announcements to come out of D23 this year was the news that new "Encanto" and "Indiana Jones" themed attractions would be coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But as is the case with most new attractions and lands, this means we will have to bid a fond farewell an old friend, in this case DinoLand U.S.A. Before we do though, let’s travel back a few million years and explore some of the history and fun facts of this prehistoric land!

1. We Found Fossils!
As the story of DinoLand U.S.A. goes, the lovable dinosaur couple Chester and Hester had a gas station that existed long before fossils were found by the staff at the Dino Institute. When the Institute began offering time-travel tours back to the Cretaceous period, Chester and Hester just had to get in on the action. They created Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama, a roadside carnival filled with amusements, corny souvenir stands, and scrumptious snack stands. They realized they needed a time-travel tour of their own, and thus was born Primeval Whirl.

2. Primeval Whirl
Primeval Whirl was a zany roller coaster that combined the mouse-coaster thrills of Space Mountain with the spinning action of the Mad Tea Party. Primeval Whirl shared the same backstory as the nearby DINOSAUR attraction. If you looked closely at the artwork throughout the attraction, you would have seen paleontologists fussing with time travel devices and dinosaurs hoping to escape the impending asteroid.

We’ll be sharing more of our favorite memories from Dinoland U.S.A. in the days ahead. But let us know, what is YOUR favorite memory of this prehistoric playground? Tell us in the comments!

We’re making our final stop on our tour of our favorite Walt Disney World gardens, and we’ll end where we begin, with a visit to the Animal Kingdom.

Pandora: The World of Avatar is home to one of the most unique “gardens” you’ll ever see (here or on any planet!) When you take a trip with Alpha Centauri Expeditions, you get to encounter Na’vi culture and the exotic plant life that grows on Pandora. Imagineers filled the land with a mix of natural and fictional plants to make the land truly immersive. Along with the wild shrubbery spotted throughout, you’ll see things like the Challis Plant, the blue Puffball plants, and, of course, the enormous Flaska Reclanata, the spitting plant encountered near the entrance to the land. Visiting the area at night produces an entirely different experience, as many of the plants are bioluminescent, creating an ethereal glow like nothing you’ve ever seen.

That concludes our tour of our favorite gardens in Walt Disney World, but we wouldn’t be surprised if we left out your favorite! If we did, tell us YOUR favorite garden spot in the comments!

Today we’re continuing our tour of our favorite Walt Disney World gardens with a visit to EPCOT.

When you talk of Disney Gardens, Living with the Land is likely one of the first places you think of, and with good reason! As you go through the attraction, you’ll see banana trees, cacao, jackfruit, sunflowers, pumpkins, pomelo, marigolds, snapdragons, nine-pound lemons, and much more. If you’re particularly passionate about agriculture and gardening, the Behind the Seeds experience takes you on a guided foot tour of the facility, one of the most memorable experiences you can have while visiting the park.

We’ll be sharing more of our favorite gardens in the days ahead. But let us know, what is YOUR favorite garden spot in Disney? Tell us in the comments!

Today we’re continuing our tour of our favorite Walt Disney World gardens, and we’ll be staying in the Magic Kingdom. Well, actually right outside.

Walt Disney World’s most famous flowers might just be found at the entrance to the Magic Kingdom. That’s where you’ll see a floral representation of Mickey Mouse. It’s one of the best photo opportunities in Walt Disney World, so be prepared for a crowd. The spot is so popular that Disney has placed PhotoPass photographers in the area to help Guests capture the perfect picture. If you take advantage of this offering, you might just get a little extra magic in your snapshot. Even if you’ve gotten that treasured photo on a previous trip, be sure to check out this area during the holidays or special celebrations. You’ll often find that the Disney horticulturists have added a bit of extra magic to the already-beautiful display.

We’ll be sharing more of our favorite gardens in the days ahead. But let us know, what is YOUR favorite garden spot in Disney? Tell us in the comments!

Today we’re continuing our tour of our favorite Walt Disney World gardens with a visit to the Magic Kingdom.

This one might be a “go with me here” entry, but today we’re heading toward Adventureland and Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. No discussion of the flowers of Walt Disney World would be complete without a visit here, after all, that’s where the birds sing words and the flowers croon. The Birds of Paradise and Orchids in the show aren’t real, but they are some of the most talented plants you are ever likely to encounter. You can spot the orchids when they lower from the ceiling in their flower beds and the birds of paradise in the room’s corners.

We’re going to continue our visual tour of our favorite Walt Disney World gardens this week, and we will start our adventure at Disney’s Animal Kingdom!

It’s easy to miss the beauty of the Oasis as you race through to Flight of Passage or Expedition Everest. However, if you take the time to explore this tropical wonderland, you’ll be richly rewarded. It positively overflows with life. In addition to the many animals that populate the area – such as the African Spoonbill and Hyacinth Macaws – there are numerous plants to be found here. Keep an eye out for the epiphytes. They are peculiar plants that require no soil to grow. You can see them growing on the rocks and trees.

Our next stop takes us to the Tree of Life. You could spend days simply walking around its base and gazing up at the hundreds of animal carvings that cover it. But the pathways around the tree also provide their own beauty. As you walk around the tree, look into the nearby waters. Lilly pads dot the surface, and if you are there during the right season, you’ll even catch a glimpse of the stunning water lilies that grow out of them.

Today we'll be wrapping up our tour of our Five Favorite World Showcase gardens!

We'll end where we began, over in the United Kingdom Pavilion. Here you can wander through the Butterfly and Knot Herb Garden. There are numerous flowers that are placed to attract butterflies. You might even catch a few flitting about. In the herb garden, located near the replica of Anne Hathaway’s cottage, you’ll see things like parsley, sage, and rosemary. One of our favorite details can be seen during the Flower & Garden Festival, when elegant English tea cups from Twinings of London join the display!

Today we continue our tour of our Five Favorite World Showcase gardens!

The winding pathways behind the pagoda in the Japan Pavilion are often overlooked by Guests (even I am guilty of making a beeline to the Mitsukoshi Department Store at times!), but if you take the time to explore them they just might become one of your favorite “get away from everything” destinations in all of Walt Disney World. It all begins with a relaxing Koi pond, and it’s there that you might first notice the gentle “clunk” of the Shishi-odoshi (sometimes called bamboo water hammers). These simple but ingenious devices were often used to scare away deer and other animals, but have since become a meditative feature of many Japanese gardens. The gentle winding paths and bridges lead up to the courtyard near Katsura Grill, one of our absolute favorite places to relax (especially at night underneath the glow of the colorful paper lanterns).

Today we continue our tour of our Five Favorite World Showcase gardens!

One of the most beautiful (if not THE most beautiful) gardens in Walt Disney World can be found at Epcot’s Canada Pavilion, Victoria Gardens. The rolling hills, babbling brooks, and colorful flower beds were inspired by the Butchart Gardens near Victoria, British Columbia. The original gardens were completed in 1921, overseen by Jennie Butchart. Today, the Butchart Gardens includes The Rose Carousel, housed inside the 7,500 square-foot Children’s Pavilion. The carousel is enclosed by a 75-foot-tall glass-faced dome covered by a roof planted with native plant species. Unfortunately, there’s no carousel in the Canada pavilion, but you can still tour this beautiful country in the Canada Far and Wide show.

Today we continue our tour of our Five Favorite World Showcase gardens!

Across the lagoon in the China Pavilion, you’ll discover one of the most peaceful locations in all of Walt Disney World; the lotus water garden in front of the replica of the Temple of Heaven. While most people may hurry past the garden on their way to see Reflections of China (or to grab an egg roll at the Lotus Blossom Café), be sure to take a moment to gaze at the tranquil beauty of this lovely and unique water garden. For an even more peaceful moment of reflection, visit the pavilion after IllumiNations ends and take a stroll back to the far corner of the pond. It will seem as if you’re miles away from civilization, and the combination of a cool evening breeze, soothing music playing in the background, and the delicate beauty of the floating lilies will transport you to a place of relaxation and tranquility.

More to come in the days ahead!!

Join us as we spend this week taking a tour of our Five Favorite World Showcase gardens!

First up is a pair of gardens in adjacent World Showcase pavilions. In the UK pavilion, the young and young at heart can wind their way through the hedge maze found in the central courtyard. The maze was inspired by the Somerleyton Hall yew hedge maze created in 1846. The path from the center of Somerleyton Hall’s maze to the exit is around 800 yards, but fortunately, the version in Epcot is quite a bit smaller. The UK Pavilion maze sports hedges that are 2 ½ feet tall, so those of you that are taller than that (I’m talking to you, moms and dads!) are on your honor not to peek!

Meanwhile, in the France pavilion, you’ll find the meticulously manicured jardin à la française (French formal garden). This beautiful landscaping style focuses on balance and symmetry as opposed to colorful blooms and was quite popular in the 17th century when a similar garden was created at Versailles (which you can see in the Impressions de France film). See if you can spot the beautifully manicured Hidden Mickey hiding in the shrubbery!

More to come in the days ahead!!

Today we'll complete our WayBack Tour of EPCOT's World of Motion!

As we complete our tour, we beigin with the dawn of air travel, where you saw airplanes and other flying machines. You then went on a Sunday drive out to the country to watch an airshow. The song “It’s Fun to be Free” returned as everyone was enjoying their newfound mobility through family trips and air travel.

Next up was the highlight of the attraction, the curved wall “speed rooms.” Even though the vehicles traveled at the same speed as before, you really felt the need to hold on. (The bobsled ride was especially invigorating!) The final scene was of a futuristic city, CenterCore, that promised bolder and better ideas related to travel and mobility. The tour concluded with a visit to the TransCenter, where you could see prototype cars of the future.

In summary, World of Motion showed how humans progressed from walking to watercraft to animal power and eventually to the invention of the wheel. It wasn’t just about the ability to transport goods further; it was also about the opportunity to travel to visit family and friends and the freedom to enjoy activities far beyond those within walking distance.

Let's continue our WayBack Tour of EPCOT's World of Motion!

Today's adventure takes us to the marketplace scene, where various modes of transportation were being sold, much like today’s used car lot. Further on was the explorer scene, which contained more detailed “wind ships” with giant human heads providing wind for ships and advancing the flat earth superstition. The staring contest between a large dragon-like sea serpent and a sailor with a telescope was always a favorite!

Next was the age of the Renaissance. Here, you saw a quiet Mona Lisa waiting for her portrait to be completed, followed by Leonardo da Vinci working on his Flying Machine. Despite the humorous tone of the scene, it’s still amazing to see how his rudimentary experiments were not too far off from the flying aircraft we see today.

Just around the corner on your right was a steam-driven stagecoach confronting a snorting bull on a one-lane bridge, each staring at the other, contesting who had the right of way. Next up you saw some massive steam-powered paddlewheel boats filled with nighttime partiers dancing and singing to joyous banjo music. Soon after, you came upon visions of the scenic west and an elaborate train robbery.

We eventually made our way to a busy city...and traffic jams. Horses, buggies, automobiles, and public streetcars, all needed to share those city roads. This culminated in a humorous traffic accident complete with astonished pedestrians, clucking chickens, and a police officer trying to sort out the mess!

Next time we'll be completing our journey through World of Motion, buckle up!

Leet's continue our WayBack Tour of EPCOT's World of Motion!

Upon entering, you proceeded up a ramp to the loading area, which was located on the mezzanine level. After steadying yourself on the moving walkway, you climbed aboard your continually-moving vehicles (similar to attractions like the Haunted Mansion). Your journey began as you looped outside and over the main entrance, giving you a picturesque view of Spaceship Earth before proceeding up to the second level. First up was a trip to the prehistoric age, back when humans traveled by foot. Here, you encountered a prehistoric human blowing on his feet to cool them, which provided a humorous reminder of how far humankind has come. The use of water as a travel highway was the subject of the next scene, followed by a scene showing people using animals as a form of locomotion.

Next up, the invention of the wheel. Hopeful inventors were lined up, offering various prototypes, including a triangle, a square, and a hexagon. Fortunately, it was the round device in the back of the scene that was selected as the wheel of choice. (That was close!)

Stay tuned as we continue our journey through World of Motion!

Who remembers EPCOT's World of Motion???

Let’s take a trip back in time to the early years of EPCOT and specifically, World Discovery. Prior to EPCOT’s recent transformation, this section of the park was called Future World East, and was home to Test Track, Mission: SPACE, and Cosmic Rewind. But back in EPCOT’s early years, Guests had the opportunity to learn all about energy (at the Universe of Energy), the promise of tomorrow (Horizons), and the story of how we got from here to there…literally. This last adventure took place an attraction that is often overlooked today, the World of Motion. World of Motion opened with EPCOT on October 1, 1982, and took you on a whimsical tour through the history of transportation. The pavilion was sponsored by General Motors, and included an Omniverse-style attraction and the General Motors Transcenter, which highlighted new automobiles and included five transportation-related exhibit areas.

Buckle Up!
As you approached the massive, gleaming 65-foot high cylindrical building, you could see Guests passing over the main entrance in their ride vehicles. This unique feature helped build anticipation before you even entered the building! (More to come this week!!)

Today we're wrapping up our tour of our favorite Walt Disney World Parades from years past!

Tapestry of Nations (Epcot)
Introduced as part of the Millennium Celebration (along with IllumiNations 2000: Reflections of Earth and the Millennium Village), the Tapestry of Nations Parade was built around the themes of unity and world peace. The central figure of the parade was the Sage of Time. The massive “Millennium drums” that beat throughout the performance symbolized a human heartbeat, and the procession was filled with a vast array of gorgeous and towering puppets. They included Hammer Man (a humanoid character made of metal sheets), The Sprite (a winged character with a three-tiered tail), and Disc Man (a character whose body was made up of discs and whose head was adorned with dreadlocks).

Festival of Fantasy Parade (Magic Kingdom)
This parade (which debuted in 2014) is most famous for its enormous, steampunk Maleficent float that is shaped like a dragon and breathes real fire. At 52 feet long, she’s quite an impressive creature and was Disney’s first float to require a bending chassis base. As elaborate as that is, don’t overlook the detailed work that went into creating the character costumes as well. Designed by Mirena Rada, each is a detailed work of art. Some of the characters from Tangled require as many as 28 different types of fabric to create their costumes, while the seashell girl from The Little Mermaid takes 30 yards of fabric per costume and uses 12 different mesh colors!

Here are some more memories of our favorite Walt Disney World Parades from years past!

Aladdin’s Royal Caravan (Disney-MGM Studios)
Debuting in 1992, the parade featured several Genie variations, including a “split in two” Genie, a Genie in the bathtub, a Genie peeking out of a treasure chest, and a 32-foot-tall version of the big blue man. Visitors to the Magic Kingdom can still encounter one of the more memorable aspects of the parade: the golden, spitting camels. While they can now be found at The Magic Carpets of Aladdin in Adventureland, they originally rolled through the Studios, squirting water at unsuspecting Guests. As an amusing side note, the villainous Jafar was relegated to being a mere street sweeper at the end of the parade. He pushed a wheeled trash bucket along, and Guests could hear Iago’s squawking voice from inside.

Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade (Disney’s Animal Kingdom)
The parade debuted in 2001 as part of the 100 Years of Magic Celebration. The "animals" in the parade were actually designed to be folk art representations. The safari vehicles were each devoted to a separate Disney character, and each reflected the character’s personality in some way. Goofy’s was a sprawling mess, complete with a smoking grill being pulled behind his jeep. Donald Duck’s resembled a boat, while Minnie Mouse’s was all polka dots and picnic items!
A holiday overlay version of the parade was also created, with the Jammin’ Jungle Parade being replaced by Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade.

Here are some more memories of our favorite Walt Disney World Parades from years past!

SpectroMagic (Magic Kingdom)
We begin with a beloved favorite! In 1991, as part of Walt Disney World’s 20th-anniversary celebration, Spectromagic debuted in the Magic Kingdom, welcoming Guests into “the splendor, the spectacle, the sparkling sensation, where the romance, the comedy, and the thrill of Disney fantasies come to electric life.” A whopping 118 Cast Members were required for the parade, which used 948 batteries and over 100 miles of fiber optic cable. There were 39 floats and over 45 characters, including the Three Little Pigs, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Captain Hook, and more.

March of the ARTimals (Disney’s Animal Kingdom)
Who remembers this one?? Animal Kingdom’s first parade debuted with the park’s opening in 1998. Disney’s tease for the parade was cryptic, noting, “It’s not a parade… it’s not a procession…so what is it? Join us and find out as we present our fun, zany and fanciful one-of-a-kind’ moving celebration’ of imagination and living art inspired by the world of animals.”
Unlike other Disney parades, this one featured no Disney characters or music. Instead, it was intended to highlight the creations of various artists who created representations of animals out of “found” items. The artists in question were meant to be residents of Safari Village, the original name of the park’s central hub, and images of the artists were even incorporated into some of the parade costumes. Among the parade’s various animals were seahorses, frogs, bees, elephants, a tiger, a monkey, a lion (the last of which played a xylophone), and a large, walking spider with moving legs.
