NEC Shroud of Turin exhibit drew crowds and Jonathan Roumie The National Shroud of Turin Exhibit was one of the most popular attractions of the National Eucharistic Congress; standing room only.
We were so blessed to have the friendship of Barrie Schwortz and to benefit from his knowledge and passion for the Shroud as we shared with him what was his last trip to Turin in 2019. He joyously offered a personal tour of the royal palace, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, and the Guarini Chapel. Together we explored the city and had meetings with religious and scientific authorities to forge further collaborations that have borne much fruit.
Just the year before, Barrie was present for the 40th anniversary of the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) with Dr. John Jackson and Russ Breault at the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans in Shreveport, Louisiana. He volunteered his time to speak to the youth of Loyola College Prep as well. He even participated in this podcast series (Episode #36).
While we grieve his loss, we are happy to have shared such important work and wonderful memories.
With great sadness we have learned today of the passing of Barrie Schwortz, well known to everyone involved with or connected to the study of the Shroud of Turin. Barrie was the documenting photographer on the 1978 STURP team (Shroud of Turin Research Project), the only time the Shroud has ever been permitted to have extensive on-site scientific examination. For nearly thirty years, Barrie maintained the largest clearinghouse of information about the Shroud on the web: Shroud.com.
Barrie was much loved and will be greatly missed.
Shalom, dear Barrie.

Who is the Man of the Shroud?
It is quite possibly the most fascinating object known to exist in the world. It is certainly the most studied.
Fr. Peter Mangum, Rector of the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans in Shreveport, Louisiana, and Dr. Cheryl White, Associate Professor of History at Louisiana State University at Shreveport, host a weekly podcast series examining the many questions about this cloth -- is it a clever medieval relic forgery? Is it a religious icon produced by some process unknown to the 21st century? Is it the authentic burial shroud of Jesus Christ?
Fr. Mangum and Dr. White are members of the American Confraternity of the Holy Shroud, an exclusive sister organization of the Arch-Confraternity of Turin, the curators and custodians of the Shroud since 1597. The mission of the ACHS is the ongoing study of the Shroud of Turin, as well as promoting educational efforts around the world. Both Fr. Mangum and Dr. White have trained with the noted Shroud Center of Colorado, founded by Dr. John Jackson, the leading scientist on the 1978 Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) authorized by Pope St. John Paul II. Dr. White has presented papers at international conferences for Shroud scholars, and the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans is a regional center for study of the Holy Shroud.
