105-year-old great-grandmother received a standing ovation and a master's degree from Stanford
STANFORD, California -- At age 105, Virginia Hislop has lived a full life with two children, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She has devoted much of her life to education and has served on school and college boards in central Washington, where she lives.
Despite her success, she says something was missing.
"From time to time, I wished I had finished and gotten my master's (degree)," Hislop said. "Part of it was the fact that I've been a college director for a good number of years and I didn't have the advanced degree that some of the other ones did."
Hislop had taken the required classes at Stanford University but had not yet submitted a master's thesis when the U.S. entered World War II in 1941.
"The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor," Hislop explained.
She quickly married her college sweetheart before his Army deployment. She assisted in the war effort then focused on her family but never finished her thesis.
"Fast-forward 83 years -- we don't have a thesis requirement anymore so she's actually satisfied the requirements for Master of Arts in the Graduate School of Education," said Daniel Schwartz, dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education. "So, 83 years later, we're honoring this woman who has done so much."
Sunday afternoon at the education department's commencement ceremony, fellow graduates and Hislop's family, many of whom live in the Bay Area, gave her a standing ovation as she walked onto the stage with a little support from her cane.
"So much gratitude. She's believed in all of us and cheered us on all the way through and we get to cheer her on now. It's pretty cool," said Elizabeth Jensen, Hislop's granddaughter. "I feel like this is the crowning glory of her amazing career. This is her lifetime achievement award."
Hislop received her master's academic hoop and her diploma.

Meet Mira Murati
She is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at OpenAI, the company behind Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot ChatGPT. Indian origin Mira was born and raised in San Francisco, United States of America.
The AI chatbot ChatGPT was created by San Francisco-based OpenAI, a startup that conducts artificial intelligence research. The application was made available in November 2022. It is capable of talking about anything from history to philosophy, generating song lyrics, and making changes to computer programme code. ChatGPT has now become very popular across the globe. It is trained on a sizable collection of articles, websites, and social media postings in addition to real-time talks, mostly in English, with human contractors employed by OpenAI. It picks up on the writing's syntax and organisation and learns to reflect commonly used expressions. The chatbot's correctness isn't always reliable because its sources aren't fact-checked and it depends on user input to get better.
As per media reports, experts are now raising concerns about the dangers associated with AI software. Recently in an interview with Time magazine, she expressed her concerns over the misuse of Artificial Intelligence. "AI can be misused, or it can be used by bad actors. So, there are questions about how you govern the use of this technology globally. How do you govern the use of AI in a way that’s aligned with human values?"
Murati joined Open AI in June 2018 as Vice President, of applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Partnerships, and is currently CTO of Open AI, the California-based research and publishing company behind the development of ChatGPT.

The country’s rice prices are the highest among five countries -- Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam. According to the latest report of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the daily food crops report of the health ministry, rice price has decreased in those countries. The prices of almost all essential commodities have gone up, making it difficult for the common people to meet their daily needs.
The soaring prices of essentials like rice, pulse, onion, and vegetable, are forcing many to rush to OMS (Open Market Sale) trucks of Trading Corporation Bangladesh to buy their commodities at lower prices. And people from bank employees to daily workers stand in the queue to buy goods from this TCB truck. Because they are not able to buy anything in the local market.

Google employee resigns, citing retaliation and hostility for pro-Palestinian activism
The employee, Ariel Koren, a marketing manager for Google’s educational products arm who has worked for the company for seven years, spent more than a year organizing against Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion agreement for Google and Amazon to supply Israel and its military with artificial intelligence tools and other computing services. Ms. Koren, 28, helped circulate petitions and lobby executives, and she talked to news organizations, all in an effort to get Google to reconsider the deal.
Then, in November, she said, came a surprising ultimatum from Google: Agree to move to São Paulo, Brazil, within 17 business days or lose your job. Ms. Koren marketed educational products to Latin America and was based in Mexico City before moving to San Francisco during the pandemic. But, she said, there was not a clear business justification for the mandated move or its urgency, and a supervisor in Brazil told her that employees in São Paulo were working from home because of the pandemic.
