Someone recently asked us: is it OK if I leave my omega-3 supplements in a jar on the countertop? They’re easier for me to see, but I’m worried about them being exposed to light. Hear the answer from Elana Natker, dietitian and GOED’s director of consumer and health professional communication.
If you think supplements are only for people who are sick or on special diets, think again! Most people do not eat fatty fish twice per week, which is the minimum you need to get heart-, brain- and eye-health-supporting EPA and DHA omega-3s. GOED recommends getting at least 500 mg EPA+DHA every day, well above the average 90-100mg that most people get! Learn more in this video.

If you follow a plant-based diet, you have to be extra careful to make sure you’re getting enough EPA and DHA omega-3s. Eating fatty fish like salmon and sardines is the main way to get these important nutrients. Taking an algal oil supplement made from marine microalgae is another, since it’s the only vegan source of EPA and DHA. Plant-based seafood can be great for mimicking the taste and texture of seafood, but nutrition-wise it can vary greatly! Be sure to get the omega-3s you need by choosing algal-oil fortified plant-based seafoods or better yet, take an algal oil supplement!
Pregnant women need EPA and DHA omega-3s - not only for their own well-being but also for supporting the developing baby's brain and eye health. Shockingly, a recent study found that about 25% of expectant mothers are falling short on these essential nutrients. Current guidelines suggest that pregnant women should have three servings of low-mercury fish (preferably fatty fish) per week and get at least 100-200 mg MORE of the omega-3 DHA per day for a healthy pregnancy. Taking an omega-3 supplement is a surefire way to make sure you’re meeting your daily needs.

If you’re pregnant and taking a prenatal vitamin, be sure to check the Supplement Facts label. Many prenatal supplements contain little - if any - of the omega-3 DHA, which is critical for the baby’s brain and eye development. GOED recommends that pregnant women get at least 300 mg of DHA as part of their daily total of at least 700 mg EPA+DHA omega-3s. Dr. Kaitlin Roke, GOED’s director of scientific communications and outreach - and a mom-to-be - explains in this video.

What do you know about dietary supplements and how they’re regulated? It’s a common myth to say they are unregulated - in fact, there are regulations all around the world, including in the United States, strictly focused on supplement safety and what you can say on a label. Let’s hear from our expert: Dr. Harry Rice, vice president of regulatory and scientific affairs for GOED. #omega3s #alwaysomega3s #supplements #supplementregulations
Did you know that 1 in 10 babies worldwide are born premature? One of the themes of this year’s World Prematurity Day (Nov. 17) is “small actions, big impact.” One small action a pregnant mom can take is to make sure she’s getting enough EPA and DHA omega-3s, nutrients that help prevent early preterm birth (<34 weeks). According to a Cochrane review, increasing EPA+DHA intake during pregnancy was associated with a 42% reduction in early preterm birth. A daily fish oil, krill oil or vegetarian algae oil supplement providing at least 700 mg EPA+DHA is what GOED recommends for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
