This beauty of a hutch has been sitting outside and is weathered and glorious 😂😂
This will be converted to an all in one bathroom vanity with the sink mounted in the bottom and the missing glass up top replaced with mirrors for a medicine cabinet 💙💙
I will be cleaning the piece as best I can without removing too much paint and then clear coating it with multiple layers of sealer to keep everything just as it is!!!!!
Soooo my first house project was not exciting enough to vlog but it warrants a post!
This is my cold storage room!! A huge space, in my basement, with concrete walls and a mix of built in wood shelves and free standing metal shelves. I chose to do this project first because with time it will become fuller and I just didn’t want to move all the stuff and things!
This room was fairly clean with minimal staining/scuffing in the shelves but I chose to repaint it and below I’ll explain my why:
To start I used a porch/floor paint because it’s durable, dries quickly and is good for wood, concrete, metal and several other surfaces. I chose to paint EVERYTHING walls included in one go.
The obvious reason to paint is to start fresh with a bright, clean surface BUT the biggest reason I decided to paint was for smell! I have a canine nose, I can smell EVERYTHING and for Vintage & Varnish this has served me well. Old wood gets musty, it holds smells such as dampness, animal urine or f***s, ci******es etc…
The BEST way to prevent smells in wood is to SEAL it. Now these shelves were already painted aka “sealed” but here’s the little trick….
PAINT THE UNDERSIDES OF THE SHELVES. The under parts of these wood shelves were raw wood and that means they were holding the damp smells of an older, unfinished basement. I coated every square inch of this room with one coat of bright white paint and although it made a fairly minimal difference on the way it looks it made a huge difference to the fresh smell for my K9 schnauze!! 😂😂
My shop is cleared out and empty!!! This space was formerly being used as a paint booth with temporary walls, brighter lights, fans, heaters etc. For 7 years I drug all those massive, heavy furniture pieces up and down 13 stairs to this space 😳
So excited for our move and to build and create a better more back friendly space 😂

With the new move out to the county of Smoky Lake Vintage & Varnish services have changed!!
Vintage and Varnish will continue refurbishing furniture for resale but will no longer be offering commission services - this may change in the future after a shop build and delivery program has been put in place.
Vintage & Varnish will continue to blog and create DIY tutorials and more time will be spent on YouTube and live videos going forward. Vintage & Varnish will no longer be offering sign painting workshops or sign parties, this additional time will be used to grow our DIY library for our followers.
Vintage & Varnish will no longer be selling signs, photo plaques and other home décor at this time and will be concentrating solely on creating furniture. Home décor items will continue to be available at the Spruce Park Ranch Country Store in Parkland county through the end of December 2022 and will continue to be available at Sentimental Salvage and Décor in Myrnam, AB.
As I continue with my business going forward, new services will become available and will be updated as I get setup in my new shop.
Thank you all. I'm excited for this new chapter and for everything it will entail for my family as well as for my business going forward.

I have been a little absent lately but there was A LOT going on over here and I have a big announcement!!
Over the last month we have been busy travelling to look at rural property, refinishing our home to list and going through all the motions of buying and selling. We have officially sold our home here in Edmonton and have purchased an acreage in Smoky Lake county.
Currently my new property does not have a shop so I will be stepping back until we build one. However, we have purchased a beautiful 1930’s farmhouse with many original features which we plan to restore and refresh so you can follow along on those adventures as I post videos on how we complete our projects ❤️
My new location will also mean some changes in my services. Next week I will post an update on what you can expect from Vintage & Varnish going forward!

Happy Monday!!!

Introducing "Indira"
**Please note - Vintage & Varnish does not refinish and sell furniture from homes with smokers and this set is therefore not for sale (I will be keeping it for personal use).
This pair of nightstands was beautiful "as is" however they came from a home with heavy smokers. Typically I never buy items that have smells from ci******es or animals as these smells are extremely difficult to remove however long story short I didn't listen to my gut instincts and so here we are 😆 When I started working on these (after leaving them to air out in my garage for 3 weeks) I debated numerous times just calling it and taking them to the landfill because the cigarette smell was THAT bad and I have a nose like a police K9 🤷♀️ I'm not going to go into detail on the refinish on this piece but instead I will cover my process for removing the smell from this furniture and sealing in the ni****ne to prevent it from leaching and staining the finish...
To start I removed all of the drawers and vacuumed them as well as the interiour of the "cabinet". I then washed and scrubbed the stands inside and out with hot water and TSP using a blue scrub pad. I then removed all of the hardware as well as the backer piece of the cabinet (it was hardboard which holds smells and doesn't wash easily - it is also easier to complete the next steps if you can access the interiour of the furniture from the front and the back.) I completed a second scrub with hot water and vinegar, doused the interiour of the piece with ZEP Odour Eliminator Spray - a step I completed at least 6 times. NOTE: Zep Odour Eliminator is more of an air freshener and will not actually "eliminate" cigarette smoke from furniture, this only helped to make the piece manageable for me to stick my head inside to complete the next steps of priming. I left the piece to dry overnight.
To seal the ni****ne as well as the smell into the piece I painted the entire piece with 3 coats of primer - this includes the sides/top/back/underneath and insides of the cabinets as well as all 3 drawers (inside/outside/bottom). Even the drawer slides were wood and required multiple coats of primer to eliminate the smell. Typically I advise against painting slides as it causes a lot of issues of "sticking" preventing the drawers from sliding smoothly, this was rectified with 2 coats of wax.
After priming I completed my painting and sealing and replaced the back of the furniture with new board. I chose to paint the drawer interiours to add an additional layer of sealant against any potential smell and I replaced the hardware as the original had a few broken and missing k***s.
And all that concludes why I NEVER buy furniture from homes that have been smoked in 😆😆😆 I choose NOT to sell these pieces because even the smallest area that has not been properly primed and sealed can create a smell throughout the entire piece of furniture stinking up the drawers and all your belongings and I'd rather NOT risk selling something of that nature to my customers!
This nightstand pair has a slight regal feel with the columned edges and carved wood trim. I love this pair in red with subtle black and gold detailing.
Wishing you good things, Happy Easter!
This piece is full of texture, patina and gold waxes 😍😍 Full reveal next week....
Wishing you and yours an awesome weekend filled with family, friends and delicious food 💙
Transformation Tuesday!!!
Introducing "Marella"
This gorgeous sideboard started it's life as a two piece dining hutch - the top found a new home as the upper portion of a bar cabinet and the base was transformed into this custom hutch - Canadian made by Vilas this piece is solid cherry maple wood. The top was stripped and refinished in General Finishes walnut creating a gorgeous brown with grey undertones. The bottom trim was removed and updated with solid wood bundt feet and the body was painted with General Finishes Milk Paint in "Gulf Stream Blue". The pulls and hinges were updated in a matte pewter to finish off the modern farmhouse feel.

Sneak Peek!
Well really I already gave the goods away bragging about my new puppy 🤷♀️ - details on this piece will be posted Wednesday!
I recently refinished this coffee table set - this custom job was squeezed in among other projects and I had SO many pieces of furniture in both my shop and my "drop zone" that beautifully staged photos were impossible! This coffee table is about 3'x3' so space was tight for spreading out but I just had to share because her curved legs and carved wood are so pretty!!! 🖤🖤🖤
Hiya Buddy! 💙
Vintage & Varnish has had lots of temporary fur babies passing through these last few months! But this little guy is my new baby and he'll be sticking around!! Introducing Gunner!!! He's a fur ball so for the most part he'll be banished from my shop LOL but he enjoys dropping in on photo days 😉
I recently posted this refinished dresser with a little bit of history which I am now going to repeat in case you missed that post! - This antique dresser was originally purchased from the T. Eaton's mail order catalogue somewhere between 1900 and 1910. The government of Canada actually has these old catalogues archived on their website online. When I originally purchased the piece from a storage locker I dug through these old archives to find the pieces most similar to help me date the piece, I saved what I found and wanted to share it because I'm a super nerd and think this is super cool 🤓🤓
I recently purchased a Kobo eReader and I have been flying through books! I'll include a list of my last 5 books below, let me know your recommended reads!!!!
1.) Bossypants by Tina Fey (HILARIOUS)
2.) I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai
3.) Becoming by Michelle Obama
4.) You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero
5.) The Science of Running by Steve Magness
Introducing "LORRAINE"
This antique dresser was originally purchased from the T. Eaton's mail order catalogue somewhere between 1900 and 1910. I actually tracked down the year when I originally purchased the piece from a storage locker and I am seriously kicking myself for not writing it down! However I did keep some photographs from the original catalogue and those as well as the original purchase tag will be included with the piece.
When this dresser was originally manufactured oak was a common wood choice for furniture and cutting it at an angle (quarter sawn, also known as tiger oak for it's two toned stripe pattern,) was very popular. Because of the higher waste produced by this style of cut, tiger oak was an expensive furniture finish more commonly used for high end pieces. The T. Eaton company (better known now as the Eaton's department store) used to replicate this popular tiger oak pattern by printing it on the furniture, a revolutionary process at the time.
This antique dresser is made of solid hardwood with dovetail drawers and a beautiful mirror with ornamental wood carvings. The original mirror glass is in amazing condition for the age with almost no black spotting. The original tiger oak finish was very worn, peeling and had alligatored in many spots so it was sanded off to the hardwood underneath. The original wood did not have much in terms of pretty grain patterns so this dresser was refurbished with a painted finish.
The dresser and mirror were primed and painted in a warm grey followed by a pure white. A faux aged finish was created by allowing the paint to chip in areas to reveal the grey paint underneath. The hardware was badly tarnished and a few handles were broken so the pulls were upgraded to a twisted pewter ring pull to coordinate with the grey in the piece. The wood top was bleached and white washed to tone down the red hues and create a softer, timeworn look.
The drawer interiours were refreshed with a good cleaning and sanding. The entire interiour of the piece, cabinet and drawers, was hand rubbed with a scented wax to moisturize and protect the wood for years to come. The drawer slides were cleaned and waxed for easy gliding and the sides of the drawers were stamped with a tiled print to add a little bit of dimension and character.
Measurements:
32" wide
17.5" deep
68" tall (33" height plus 35" mirror height)
$449.99
**The exteriour of this cabinet was sealed with 3 coats of a highly durable urethane/acrylic topcoat in a "Flat" sheen, durable enough for use in high traffic areas.
Please message me directly if you are interested in purchasing this dresser. A 25% non-refundable deposit is required to hold this piece, and pick up/delivery can be accommodated at your request.
