Christmas has arrived here in Japan and, since I teach at a Catholic junior-senior high school, I've got Christmas day off and have a bit of time to write you a short message. I want to start by thanking you for staying connected with me despite my tendency to procrastinate and fail to keep in touch regularly. Hopefully I can do a better job next year. Speaking of the new year, it promises to bring a lot of challenges and exciting opportunities for me and my family. I hope to share them with you as we move forward. For now I would like to wish you and your family warm fellowship and merrymaking this season, and of course a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Tax season is here, so it's a great time to get your records in order and start planning for how you can best reduce your taxes for next season. You might be thinking that I'm a bit too upbeat about such a dreaded subject, but here are a few things to think about. Consider turning your passion into a business and take advantage of the great business tax deductions and credits that could greatly reduce your overall tax obligation. Got kids? Even better! You could put them to work doing legitimate jobs such as making copies, stuffing envelopes or really anything related to your business. Accountants say that a parent or guardian could pay a child up to $12,000 tax free. That's a pretty big deal, especially if there are more kids in the family.
