Todays special guest was Willie Gayten, School Resource Officer with the Brookhaven School District and other schools within the district. He spoke on crime prevention tips at home and domestic abuse.

Mr. Gayten recommended that our club members be aware of our surroundings. To make sure we lock our home and auto doors. Do not leave valuables in our vehicles. If possible, install a home security system. Do not allow your mail to accumulate while you are on vacation, instead have a friend or family member pick it up. Set up direct deposits for benefits checks. Never allow unsolicited contractors into your home. Never give your personal information out over the phone to anyone who has called you, even from a trusted business that you have an account. Never allow someone to rush you into giving out info or paying something stating it’s an emergency.

He spoke about the different types of domestic abuse. Domestic abuse can be physical, emotional, financial, sexual, isolation, and stalking. An abusive partner is controlling - whether it is through finances, gatekeeping who their partners can or cannot see, making frequent, sometimes unannounced calls or visits to a partners place of work to keep tabs. If you or a loved one is experiencing domestic abuse contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or your local police department.

Our members also asked Mr Gayten questions about his candidacy for Sherriff of Lincoln County. He has 26 years of law enforcement knowledge and experience. Twenty of those years have been spent serving two law enforcement agencies, a police officer with the Brookhaven Police Department and a Conservation Officer, “game warden” for the State of Mississippi. If you would like more info on his candidacy for sherriff you can visit gaytenforsheriff.com.

Our special guest speakers Tuesday were Lauren A Self, LAT, ATV, OPE-C, Director of Sports Medicine and Regan Singleterry, ATC with Therapy Services from KDMC.

Lauren and Regan spoke on the new regulations for all outdoor practices for schools in MS. The new heat guidelines affect all outdoor activities for students. With football season starting and the high temperatures the past few weeks the kids have had to wait until later in the day to practice. All of our local schools are abiding by the rules to keep our kids safe. All precautions are being taken to prevent heat related sicknesses.

As a precaution ice dunk stations are ready to implement if needed. We learned of guidelines that state if a student has a heat related illness and their internal body temperature gets higher than a specific range they are required to get their temperature stable before transporting the student via ambulance to the hospital. The student is placed in an ice bath to lower their internal body temperature, then transported for further care.

We are thankful for the many professionals in the Lincoln County School District and Brookhaven School District, along with KDMC, for keeping our kids safe!

If you would like to speak to the Brookhaven Lions Club about your organization or business, please contact us!

The Lions Club mission statement is to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and promote international understanding through Lions Club. If this is a mission you believe in please consider joining the Brookhaven Lions Club!

We would love to have YOU at our next weekly meeting! We meet every Tuesday at 12pm at Poppa’s Buffet and Grill located at 204 Hwy 51 N, Brookhaven, MS.

This weeks special guest was Coach Tucker Peavey from Brookhaven High School. He spoke to the Lions Club about the new MHSAA model policy for managing the heat and humidity effects on players while practicing for football that was put into practice in MS in 2023.

The new laws require a strict 14 day acclimation period for all players. The index is checked multiple times, before and during practice, to verify that the risk for heat related illnesses is avoided. The different levels of the heat index require different levels of equipment and time practicing. Anthing above certain levels will require no practices. The players are required to take hydration/cool down breaks frequently.

We appreciate Coach Peavey for taking the time to speak to us on these new laws and the importance of keeping our kids safe while having fun on the fields!

Our special Speaker today was Suellen Gunn a Natural Health Practitioner with Wellness by Design in Brookhaven.

She received the Advanced Level Clinical Certification in Nutrition Response Testing in November 2018. She has offices in McComb & Flowood, MS.

WHAT IS NUTRITION RESPONSE TESTING?
It is a non-invasive system of analyzing the body to determine the underlying causes of ill or non-optimal health. This clinically proven system may be quite different from any other healing practice that you may have experienced. I will have some questions for you before and during the testing. The actual procedure is simple and direct, with the body providing all of the information and feedback needed. We use the extraordinary properties of the human cells and tissues to bring about healing and health changes...exactly as nature (God) intended. The body responds to the procedure reliably and consistently. This feedback is so precise that it opens the door to a safe and lasting recovery, even in cases where everything else has failed.

Her goal is to connect with people and walk along side them to achieve optimal health.

If you have questions, please feel free to book a free call with her via her website, www.wellnessbydesignms.com.

You can also make an appointment to see her in one of her two locations via her website.

She also can be found on Facebook.
