Dear supporters,

First of all, I wanted to give everyone a big THANK YOU for the outpouring of support during Pinball Done Quick at SGDQ. While I haven’t received the exact dollar amounts from Twitch, I counted the number of subscriptions and bits given to our week-long stream and we raised just over $2,200 for Doctors Without Borders!

Additionally, your generosity allowed us to raise another $6,000 during the SGDQ 2017 Pinball Sweepstakes. Unfortunately, it was brought to our attention that some of the terms and conditions in the official rules of the sweepstakes were not aligned with the kind of giveaway we intended. Choosing to err on the side of caution, we decided to cancel the sweepstakes and issue immediate refunds to everyone who donated. Please keep an eye on your inbox for a notification from PayPal over the next few days. If you’d like a more detailed explanation, I’ve included one at the bottom of this e-mail. We’re really sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment.

Here’s why we’re canceling the Sweepstakes:

Some of you may be familiar with the fundraising pinball raffle held by Pinball EDU.

It’s basically a prize-based “50/50” raffle, where half of the proceeds go to the charity and half go to a lucky winner in the form of a new pinball machine. We wanted to use the same kind of fundraiser at SGDQ to raise money for Doctors Without Borders during Pinball Done Quick. As the sponsoring charity, Pinball EDU would host the raffle and contribute the net proceeds to Doctors Without Borders at the conclusion of the event.

When it comes to charities, “raffles” and “sweepstakes” are similar, but different. In particular, certain states have restrictive rules when it comes to raffles. For the fundraiser to be more inclusive, we listened to suggestions and agreed to host the event as a sweepstakes. Since we were more familiar with raffles than sweepstakes, we had lawyers draft the official rules for the sweepstakes to proceed confidently and without confusion.

Somewhere in the transition from a raffle-based model to a sweepstakes-based model, something got lost in translation. In a raffle, multiple tickets can be purchased by the same person and each ticket serves as an additional chance to win. Sweepstakes work differently. Additionally, some donors weren’t aware that donations were going to fund the prize. The best course of action, we decided, was to cancel the sweepstakes, refund the donors, and give people an alternative way to contribute directly to Doctors Without Borders while showing their love for Pinball Done Quick.

We will work diligently to ensure any future charity fundraising is communicated effectively and efficiently. Thank you for your support of Major League Pinball, Pinball Done Quick and Doctors Without Borders.
