On this date, 12-08-1980, John Lennon was shot five times by 25 year old Mark Chapman outside the Dakota building in New York City where John and Yoko lived. Chapman had been waiting for Lennon outside the Dakota apartments since mid-morning and had asked for an autograph earlier in the day. Lennon was pronounced dead from a massive loss of blood at 11.30pm. Chapman has since said he shot the former Beatle because he wanted to "steal" his fame — stating that now he was a bigger nobody than he was before. He also revealed he planned the killing for three months and considered murdering other celebrities who he thought were "phonies."

Steve Cropper has been the cornerstone of some of the best rock and soul music of the 20th century, revered by fellow musicians but never as well known as some of his collaborators. As guitarist, songwriter and producer, the 80-year-old Mr. Cropper made music with Otis Redding, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Levon Helm, Jeff Beck, John Prine, the Staples Singers, Rod Stewart and Neil Young. Among the songs he helped create are “In the Midnight Hour,” “(Sitting on) The Dock of the Bay,” “Born Under a Bad Sign” and Booker T. and the MGs’ “Green Onions,” one of the most iconic instrumental tracks ever recorded.
Mr. Cropper’s pithy, soulful guitar part on that song inspired legions of admirers. “Hearing ‘Green Onions’ on the radio as I got ready for school gave me chills and made me feel wild,” says blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan. “The guitar lead was shattering; it all sort of starts there for so many of us.”
“I’ve been asked many times why I was so successful, but I have no idea!” says Mr. Cropper. “Lots of luck. It’s not necessarily the expertise and knowledge that you have; you have to put yourself in a position to accept it when it comes. Nobody’s gonna do it for you.”

Decca records released 'Crazy' by Patsy Cline. The ballad, composed by Willie Nelson gave Cline a No.2 country hit in 1962. Nelson originally wrote the song for country singer Billy Walker, but Walker turned it down. The song's eventual success helped launch Nelson as a performer as well as a songwriter. It spent 21 weeks on the chart for Cline, and eventually became one of her signature tunes.
