Growing volatility in US stocks is driving a search for defensive assets, though investors may have fewer places to hide this time around.

Wall Street’s most closely watched measure of investor nervousness, the Cboe Volatility Index, on Friday (Oct 20) hit its highest in nearly seven months, as the S&P 500 slid for the week. The benchmark stock index is down 8% from late July, when it hit its high for the year, though still up 10% year-to-date.

Assets that can help investors weather the storm may be in short supply. Equity sectors such as utilities and consumer staples, popular with nervous investors when markets grow choppy, have been swept up in the S&P 500’s recent decline.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will reveal the Budget 2024 at 4pm today, on the heels of a realigned 12th Malaysia Plan (12 MP) to achieve sustainable development and prosperity, as well as several industry-wide blueprints to restructure and reinvigorate the economy.

This includes the National Energy Transition Roadmap which identified energy as a key engine of growth in the medium term, the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 to build on the strength of Malaysia’s manufacturing sector, as well as the Madani Economy Framework that set the tone and new long-term socio-economic goals for the country.

U.S. stock futures were trading in a tight range during Thursday's evening deals, after a negative performance among benchmark averages as fresh CPI data soured risk appetites, while traders braced for major financial earnings later in the session.

Dow Jones Futures, S&P 500 Futures and Nasdaq 100 Futures were each trading within a range of 0.1%.

Ahead in Friday's trade, market participants will be monitoring import and export price indexes and preliminary Michigan consumer sentiment and expectations surveys as well as speech from FOMC member Harker.
