Moving traffic enforcement - Travel Portsmouth 20/08/2023

Shared from Portsmouth Cycle Forum post. If you're a regular Portsmouth rider worth responding to this new Public Consultation.

“Vehicles that don’t follow traffic rules put all road users at risk, especially people who walk and cycle.

As part of our plans, we will use smart cameras to identify vehicles not complying with the road rules across Portsmouth. Currently only the police can monitor and enforce incidents.

Before applying for these powers, we want to hear from you. We’re consulting on the proposed changes for a six-week period from 18 August 2023 to 28 September 2023.

Your feedback will help us understand any issues with the locations chosen, inform any changes to the proposals and help to shape our next steps.”

Moving traffic enforcement - Travel Portsmouth We’re investing into Portsmouth’s transport network to help ensure everyone can get to where they need to go safely and reliably.

The roads to the Ferry and town centre are some of the most dangerous in the area which puts a lot off people off . It's a crucial commuter, utility & leisure route and could be great for linking to local tourist attractions with safety improvements.

Hampshire Highways have secured funding for the initial design stage of new cycleways along Mumby Road and South Street. Improvements to side road junction crossings to make safer are proposed too. The Council are looking for your input and feedback on the design options.

Next weekend is a Portsmouth's Kidical Mass bike ride and picnic. Autumn days are lovely for a scenic spin!

Kidical Mass is a worldwide movement with people riding to highlight the need for child friendly design in our roads and streetscapes.

🚲Route update 🚲 we will ride from Victoria Park to Southsea Common via Kent Street, St Georges Square, High Street and Clarence Esplanade and finish by Watkins and Faux Cafe. Do not forget to bring your own blanket and picnic! 🚲

Cyclists could be made to have registration plates and insurance – report 17/08/2022

Hopefully there will be lots of opportunities to comment of these proposed changes which seem like a massive backward step for . A cycle registration and insurance system and could deter lots of current and potential riders.

Gosport has high levels of cycling with many school, commuting, leisure and shopping trips made by bike. Lots of older people carry on riding when they give up their cars. It's great for , and it's the cheapest form of travel after .

With a climate, health and cost of living crisis making our streets and policies more bike friendly is more critical than ever, especially in a regeneration town like .

Cyclists could be made to have registration plates and insurance – report Whitehall review is also said to suggest cycling speed limits, along with licence penalty points and fines

Plans for new Gosport bus station set to be approved by county council 15/05/2022

Long post ahead - important stuff for 🚲 tho!

Cycle Gosport have been working hard to try and get the designs for the new Station scheme improved. The plans are likely to make and more difficult and dangerous with bus access and new pick up and drop off points cutting across exisiting the pedestrian and cycle routes). There has been no monitoring of levels and patterns of use by pedestrians and cyclists at this key commuter, shopping, leisure & tourism hub which has one of highest levels of cycling in Hampshire. It's crucial link for Gosport Ferry commuters to/ from and is one Sustrans NCN Route 2 - a major national tourist route.

This is a missed opportunity to improve accessability for all in and have a truly integrated and public transport hub which improves waterfront access and enables greener healthier lifestyles.

Our other major design concerns are:
- Mumby Road and South Street already have high accident rates which are likely to increase.
- Reduced cycleway on/off slips to /from ferry
- Views of harbourside blocked by long low bus shelter (which has minimal space to wait/move around and likely to feel cramped inside).
- Relocation of pick-up drop off is further to walk to ferry. Hardest for people with limited mobility. Likely to cause dangerous parking on cycleways as people try to park closer.
- A new one-way Bus Gate across the currently pedestrianised High St at South & North Cross Street (by Lloyds Bank). Buses & delivery vehicles will travel at 20mph here. Cycle access only one way too and alongside buses.
- Loss of almost 40% tree cover which will take 25yrs to regenerate. Climate emergency?

We'd love to hear your thoughts, how you use and travel to waterfront and High Street area and if/ how this scheme will affect you.
Did you see Planning Notices at Falkland Gardens in February/ March, link in Spring Coastline Magazine which appeared too late for many to respond or local fb posts? Did you look at the Planning Application? Please Share.

The Planning Application was was not well promoted and only had 9 responses when the original consultation had over 400 responses and the Waterfront SPD one had 380+ replies.

We have succeeded in ensuring that this major scheme is decided by the HCC Regulatory Committee and not just by Officers and we will report back next week. Watch this space.
