It was a Sunday morning and I had been reading about sound ornamentation in the Middle Age and Renaissance. I decided to reflect upon it through the voice of a renaissance recorder by Adrian Brown. This was my thought process. Available in all streaming platforms.

André Moutinho is one of the many Portuguese Renaissance composers about whom we know virtually nothing. His exquisite motet "Veni sponsa Christi" survives in the manuscript P-Pm MM 40 and is one of the 15 tracks from the album In Splendoribus - polyphonic music from Portugal circa 1550. The full album can be listened in almost all music streaming platforms.

In splendoribus is the communion chant for the propers of Christmas midnight mass. In this 5 part setting by Miguel da Fonseca (fl. 1530), the cantus planus is placed in the bassus while the other voices perform flourished counterpoint in a style associated to improvisatory practices of the period.
In splendoribus is also the title of the upcoming CD by Arte Minima containing wonderful introits, communions, hymns and motets by forgotten Portuguese composers ca. 1550, such as Miguel da Fonseca, André Moutinho or António Lopes.
