Some schools have started to introduce emotional intelligence into their classes which is great. Controlling our emotions is going to be the next human evolution!

We must nurture positive things. Positive emotions are really a benefit to yourself and others. Warmheartedness and a sense of responsibility clearly have an important role in modern society, in every field. Training can make a difference, so we need to plan a better education.

The below photo is of my eldest daughter Megan, it's one of my favourite photo's of her as a toddler.
Being a parent is a big responsibility, it's not something I got right all of the time, partly because I didn't know what good looked like up as a kid growing up.
I talk about all of this tricky stuff along with trying to run a business and a 2nd family along with competing in the toughest race on the planet, the Race Across America.

Here's a testimonial from Dr Jo Maddoccks
All people have extraordinary life-stories to tell but since I met Jim Rees over 20 years ago I have found his story to be one of the most fascinating. I first engaged with Jim in my work as a Psychologist, while advancing a new concept at that time called ‘emotional intelligence’. Characteristically Jim was an early adopter who went on to master the subject and inspire countless others, including myself.
Jim’s story is intriguing, not only has he completed the world’s toughest ultra-cycling event, but he is one of only a handful of people to repeat the event several times! Which takes us into the core of this book; Why would someone choose to do this? And, What can others learn from it? Having spent his career as a professional coach, forensically analysing the motivations of others, Jim is eminently qualified to examine these questions.
What makes Jim’s story special is his authenticity. In this book, he unravels past experiences, explores his vulnerabilities and questions his relationships with the same ruthless honesty and compassion he does as a coach. I thoroughly enjoyed Vicious Cycle which reads with the same contagious emotion and enthusiasm as when meeting Jim Rees in person.

I’ve just submitted my book to the printers, so it won’t be long now for those people who have already pre-ordered their copy.

I noticed that the time here in Brazil was 3.03 which is a bullet size! It feels like a bullet has been shot and it feels great to have gotten to a place where I feel I’ve done my best to share my journey so far and all of my learning and insights, it’s been tough but I’ve been supported by my kids and close friends. The feeling I have now is gratitude for all of the richness and experiences I’ve had.

My book is off to the printers this week, here’s the final testimonial written by Fred Boethling who is not only a Raam solo finisher but he loved it so much he took control of the Race Across America at a critical time for ultra cycling and kept the event alive with his passion and with the support of his son Rick.

Jim Rees is an accomplished athlete, executive coach and author. His professional career has been focused on emotional intelligence and leadership development. His new book, Vicious Cycle, provides a look into the mind of the athlete while he takes on the challenges of the world’s toughest endurance race.
Race Across America (RAAM) is a 5000-kilometer non-stop bicycle race coast-to-coast across the USA. Participants and their support crews come from all over the world to participate. In nearly four decades there have been only 347 official solo finishers. Rees has finished Solo RAAM three times, each time improving his performance.
From the initial decision to race to a successful finish, RAAM presents a seemingly endless array of challenges – financial, organizational, physical and emotional. Rees is uniquely qualified to take on these challenges and tell the story. Few individuals are able to objectively look at themselves, question why they make the decisions they do, and make changes that allow them to become a better person. Rees does that. More importantly, he inspires those around him to do the same.
For most RAAM participants, the race is a life changing experience. Many books have been written about the RAAM experience. But Vicious Cycle stands out in that it is a compelling read, offering a unique perspective, by a particularly well qualified author.

Little did I know as a young kid growing up in Australia where my journey would take me. As one door closes, infinite opportunities are bursting as thoughts about what next for me. It’s no different for all of us, a lot of the time when we think there aren’t many choices available, you need to slow down and pay attention to what your heart is saying.

This is the only photo I have of me and my birth mother Angela King, this was taken a few months before I was adopted and went from being Sean King to Jim Rees. I felt special when I was told by my Dad at 7 years old that they had chosen me as their son.
I couldn’t wait to tell my mates at school the next day that I had been chosen, I’m lucky that I saw everything that has happened since I’ve been about on this planet as part of my journey.
It’s not always been smooth by any stretch but I’ve definitely learnt and grown.

Setting big goals is something I just used to doing from a fairly early age. I wonder at times what shaped me to be such a competitive fella, even to the point where I wouldn’t let the kids beat me in anything! If they beat me or bowled me out in a knock about game of cricket, then they knew it was a well deserved victory to them, and boy did they celebrate those occasions!
I can’t say that it was genetically passed on as I was adopted at 18 months.
Which means that it was the conditioning and my environment that I grew up in that shaped me.

In Vicious Cycle I explore all of this and more whilst juggling all that is bundled up in being human.

Hallucinations play a big part in a solo riders race when competing in the Race Across America! This thankfully for me was real and happen near the top of a climb in Pagosa Springs in the 2009 race where I finished 6th overall. It almost caused my follow car to crash into me as they had taken their eyes off of the road for some reason!

In Vicious Cycle I share the stories from my 3 solo finishes and my 4 man team race in 2005 as a bunch of Ironman rookies from the UK who went on to finish a credible 4th overall.
Plus a deep look at what compelled me to go back time and time again.

The below photo is of me and my Mum when I was about 10 and is the photo that best reminds me of my inner child.
Our inner child can run patterns of behaviour that don’t serve use well as adults and most of the time these patterns are blind spots to us!

In my latest book Vicious Cycle I share my own inner child demons in the hope to creat awareness for others around their own patterns of behaviour.

"I could not, at any age, be content to take my place by the fireside and simply look on. Life was meant to be lived. Curiosity must be kept alive. One must never, for whatever reason, turn his back on life" - ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

So many people play a small role in their lives and miss the opportunity to experience lots of different things due to their conditioning. Being curious is one of the best ways to get more from each, rather than simply getting through each day.

“See it, Say it, Sorted” 02/02/2021

Let's face it, we all need feedback around how we are showing up and around the impact we are having on others, without it, we will wonder around completely oblivious, happily thinking all is fine and dandy!

“See it, Say it, Sorted” In the UK we have had the launch of a national safety campaign with the simple message of “See it, Say it, Sorted” it’s a security campaign for National Rail and when I first heard it I thought that it made complete sense. The idea is that people seeing something unusual are being encouraged t...

What makes an employee highly engaged?

24% is the number of people globally who are actively disengaged within organisations!

What does that actually mean? The best analogy I can come up with is that it’s similar to having a puncture and driving your car on the run flat, you’ll still be able to drive your car but you’ll need to drive it at the recommend sped which is at least 25% of it’s total capacity.
