Arabic Language and Cultures for Teachers 10/06/2024

Please share this opportunity for a 3-week, 15-hour, virtual professional development workshop, which will take place in July, with the teachers in your networks! The largest local school district told me that nearly 1/3 of the refugees in the district are Arabic speakers from Syria and Sudan, and teachers want and need to understand their families and cultures better, and to be able to speak a bit of Arabic to make the students and families more comfortable.

Thanks!

Abby

Important message from the COALITION of Community-Based Schools:

Our colleagues a the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) are recruiting community-based HL school teachers and administrators to participate in a series of online focus groups as part of their Building an Effective Heritage Language Program project. The discussions will focus on recommendations for building partnerships with families and communities and building connections between community-based HL schools and public schools, as well as on policies and/or practices that have worked well for community-based schools that may also serve public schools when it comes to building and/or sustaining heritage language programs. If you would like to participate, please fill out the interest form.

The focus group sessions will be scheduled between April 22 and May 3 based on participant availability and will last approximately 90 minutes. Information gathered from the sessions will be used to inform the development of a free training program to help K-12 public school educators establish HL programs that serve the needs of their communities.

If you have any questions, please contact Jamie Morgan, Senior Project Manager, CAL at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your time and support!

FNA encourages nonprofits to be involved in advocacy and lobbying activities, as permitted by the law. But when it comes to elections, there are some things that are not legal for nonprofits to do, and others that will need to be handled with caution.

According to The Johnson Amendment to the US Tax Code (1954), “a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization may not intervene in any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.”

In addition to following the law, it is also vitally important for 501(c)(3) organizations to be seen as unbiased and non-partisan in their work.
