I'm a full time professional engineer with a love for creating. At a young age my father taught me how to use his grandfather's hand saw. At that age I was just excited to cut wood whenever he would let me help. Thirty years later, I still use this hand saw. Now a days the thrill is in creating something beautiful and functional from nothing.
The old saying that "you can never have too many clamps" is true. It's going to take four days to complete this glue up!
Wenge is a naturally dark wood from Central Africa. In the rough oxidized state it's a flat black color and not very appealing. A couple passes through the planer and it's beauty is revealed.
This quarter sawn Bubinga is absolutely beautiful. Currently I'm using a card scraper to smooth out the surfaces and clean up the tool marks left by the router.
Cutting dovetails into some beautiful Bubinga.
We've completed and installed the Parota slab; featured in the lobby of local business, Live Oak Massage. It's pretty wonderful to hear about their clients' reactions to this striking sliding door!
Single Parota slab: flattened, sanded and sealed.
Commissioned for a sliding door at a local business.
52"wide โ 102" long โ 2-1/4" thick
We stopped by Niceville Slabs and Cookies this weekend and picked up these awesome Maple slabs.
We're excited to get these into the shop and see what they become. If you haven't been to Niceville Slabs & Cookies, it's worth a visit. They have a great selection of slabs and live edge material and stock a good selection of exotic and import wood. They're friendly, knowledgeable and offer milling services if you need some help getting your project started.
A sneak peek at the Parota slab after final sanding and finish.
Flattening the Parota slab today!
Today we hefted a Parota slab out of storage to begin work on a giant barn door for a local business.

Successfully trimmed and joined the two slabs. I did my best to hide the seam. Next step is addressing the cracks and voids. I'm planning to use epoxy tinted black. This will end up being a large opening barn door or a table/desk.

I'm determined to make this seam disappear. Currently it's 51 inches wide by 93 inches long and 2 inches thick.
