About 7 months ago, I was asked to play an improvised solo by my childhood hero, the one and only, Ustad Zakir Hussain. His one condition was the solo had to be based in a beat cycle such as 7, 9 or 11. I chose 7. Needless to say, it was a challenge for me to play in a beat cycle I wasn't comfortable with in front of an audience of musicians far better than me, let alone the fact, I was playing in front of my idol.
But even after I stumbled and made mistakes, he showed me grace and said "You played well, shorty, next year you will play even better, right?" with a smile.
I dedicate this short improvised piece in 7 beats as an offering to the man who inspires me to practice every single day and pushes me to break through my own boundaries.
Happy Birthday Zakir Uncle.
