"Song of the Sea Witch," my short story in the upcoming Once Upon A Wicked Heart villain anthology, is a retelling of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen from the point of view of the sea witch. In my version of the story, the witch is a sea nymph who lost her lover to the sea centuries ago and now spends her days luring ships into traps and drowning sailors out of spite—until a certain human prince appears and steals her heart. Could she have finally found a second chance at love, or will a pesky little mermaid who's also fallen for the prince prove too great a rival to defeat? 😏

"I fail to see what's so terrible about being a villain."

"Song of the Sea Witch," my short story in the upcoming Once Upon A Wicked Heart villain anthology, is a retelling of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen from the point of view of the sea witch (who I named Morgana). This is one of my favorite lines in the story, spoken by one of my favorite characters: Morgana's sea serpent companion, Llyr.

One of the most fun things about writing from a villain's perspective is making them likable, and an easy way to do that is by creating other characters who love and/or admire them. Ever since Morgana rescued him as a hatchling, Llyr has been unfailingly loyal to his mistress, helping her sink ships, spying for her across the sea, and comforting her when she's at her most vulnerable. In short, he's way cooler and more interesting than Ursula's wimpy pet eels! 🐉

The theme of the anthology is villains from fairy tales and mythology, with a sub-theme of fantasy romance. My story, "Song of the Sea Witch," is a retelling of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen as told from the sea witch's point of view. The twist? The witch also falls in love with the human prince and tries to sabotage the mermaid! Will she succeed in stealing the prince's heart, or will love prove much harder to manipulate than she thinks?

Have you ever noticed how Romeo and Juliet's first conversation forms a perfect 14-line sonnet?

Shakespeare was very deliberate with the language in his plays: whatever his characters didn't explicitly say in the text, he would hint at in the structure and meter of his poetry. The Capulet ball scene in Romeo & Juliet is an excellent example of chemistry expressed through verse; although they've only just met, Shakespeare tells his audience through their poetic exchanges that these two characters are compatible and that their attraction isn't purely physical. In short, yes, Romeo and Juliet are truly in love! 💕
