Ganga Ma
How can I possibly put to words my feelings for Ganga Ma? This beautiful body of water. (She is the most exquisite blue- green I have ever seen, and she glitters when she moves with the mica and minerals from the Himalayan mountains. This gorgeous goddess of fluidity, power and aliveness. (She dances to her own unique rhythm of wide to narrow wide to narrow and shallow to deep and shallow to deep and she turns and churns with eddies and whirlpools and textures and patterns and it is ever- changing and mesmerizing and deeply meditating.) This pure cold flow of snowmelt from the highest mountains in the world. (She is playful and refreshing and sharp and numbing.) This life-giver to the hot, flat and fertile plains of the rest of India and all her people. Puja at Ganga Ma
My first puja to Ganga Ma! Puja is a ritual offering to a deity, in this case, the river that westerners know as the Ganges, but Indian/Hindus refer to as the goddess Ganga Ma, the Great Mother Ganga. Puja usually consists of either flowers or fruit. Aarti involves flame or fire. On the shores of Ganga Ma women wait with small bowls of flowers and fruit and they light the candles and then you set the bowls on the river and send them off with thanks and prayers. At sunset you see hundreds of these tiny bowls lit up and floating on the river, while people of all ages are immersed in the water, giving thanks for it. It is a beautiful thing to witness and experience. Thank you Ganga Ma! Thank you Water!

Full circle. Water drops returning to the river. This time last year I was in the final phase of preparing to embark on my Song of Light Tour and All Water Medicine Journey. For two and a half months I brought the All Water medicine I’ve been making and carrying since 1996 to bodies of water all over the country, creating ceremony with others to “make water sacred again”. Consider this a very good sign for the new year. Our local 9 Mile Run now has a resident beaver, and beavers bring big change! Studies show beaver presence and the changes they make improves water quality, restores the aquifers beneath streams and rivers, and increases biodiversity. In my travels around the country this year on the All Water Tour, I met several water / river activists that were advocating for beaver presence and population in their watersheds. I learned alot from these people and about beavers and all they do to restore riparian ecosystems. We had a beaver here a few years back and then for a few years there was no sign of it. Now a welcome return. 9 Mile Run is loaded with garbage and pollution and I sure hope that we humans get our acts together and work with this amazing creature and their kin to improve the health of our bodies of water.
