Huge hit for overcrowded animal shelters: Spay and neuter service to shut down unless new doctor can be found A program that has provided low-cost spay and neuter services in North Carolina will shut down.
Today is Giving Tuesday! This is a big day for nonprofits and with todays cost of living, donations are cherished now more than ever. Every dollar raised will go directly towards the care of our sanctuary puffs! www.flareoaksrescue.org
Thank you The Dodo for sharing Ivy and Indy’s story!
It’s that time of year, everyone is tired of the heat outside but bored inside!

Elsa & Teddy would live off of cold watermelon if given the chance
I discovered a lump on Josie’s side a couple of weeks ago and our vet surgical removed it and sent it off for testing. We got the results of the biopsy back and unfortunately, it is a sarcoid which is a type of skin cancer. Luckily, this type of tumor does not grow internally so I will continue to check her body daily to see if any other lumps form. Josie was the first foal ever born here at FOR in 2018 and her and I have a pretty special bond. I’m grateful that other than the surgery to remove the lump, she isn’t bothered by it and these are not typically life threatening but I’m still devastated that cancer has once again touched my family.
Today is the first day of summer, or at least that’s what the calendar says. It’s been raining all week and right now it’s absolutely pouring and the high is only 65! Some of the horses including Elsa are feeling the temperature change so they’ve been brought in their stalls, outfitted in their drying rugs and are eating warm mash. I can’t believe it’s the first day of summer and I’m having to warm them up! For now, everyone is comfortable and dry and in a few days I’ll be back to trying to keep them cool.🤷🏻♀️Can we all just take a moment and appreciate that Elsa went from a terrified, reactive, abused pony to a full on gentle, trusting sanctuary puff!
Today was vet day. Vaccines, wellness checks and dentals were done for everyone along with a minor surgery for Josie. Josie recently developed a small lump on her side so that was removed and will be sent off for testing. I was proud of our little herd for being patient and waiting their turn to see our wonderful vet. Routine medical and dental care is basic care but it’s a big deal for the animals that never received it prior to being rescued. Everyone is doing well now and happy to be back out with their friends.

Diva Small Pants wasn’t acting like herself Monday night and we quickly assessed her and started treating her for colic. She has always been more sensitive and prone to colic. Colic is a painful stomach ache that can be mild to life threatening and always needs to be tended to immediately. I gave her meds and started walking her but it became clear this wasn’t a typical colic situation and Diva needed her vet. At almost 9pm our amazing equine veterinarian Dr. B was on the way. Diva was in a lot of pain and we could feel her gut spasm. Dr. B gave her IV pain meds right away and put a tube into her stomach to get soothing meds and hydration directly into her stomach. She stayed with Diva and I until almost 11pm to watch how Diva responded and once she felt confident Diva would recover at home she gave directions on how to help Diva through the night. Thankfully, around 1am Diva started to feel much better. She started banging the stall gate with her nose, flinging water buckets, calling for her friends and returning to her beautifully unruly self. As a precaution for the next month, she’ll be on ulcer treatment meds to sooth her gut. If you’d like to help us with Diva Small Pants’ vet bill, we’d be so grateful!

I met Clover 5 years ago in a gas station parking lot. She had recently gone blind and her person was giving her away. She is sweet, shy, loves hand picked grass and has reluctantly accepted that Joey, her bunny neighbor, is very much in love with her. Clover’s favorite hay is in our Amazon Wishlist (link below) if you’d like to send her a special gift! Our wishlist is full of items that we need if you’re looking for a great way to help! 🐰❤️

When you share your life with animals you certainly experience beautiful moments. You also experience moments like running full speed across a pasture, in the rain, screaming PEACHES because you’re absolutely convinced she’s nuzzling a raccoon. Tired and wet you arrive to discover she was playing with a stick with a bunch of dried leaves on it. 🤷🏻♀️
Noah went full loaf mode 🍞
Today, we purchased more hay to make sure we have plenty for the rest of the season. Winters here are a constant cycle of putting out hay, dragging fields and hoping for two days in a row without rain!
Meet Elsa! It’s not always physical healing that’s necessary. Sometimes, the worst scars are ones we can’t see. Right now, Elsa is terrified of people and does not want anyone touching her. It’s taken hours of being near her, sitting quietly in her pasture for her to allow me to be this close. With time and one positive interaction after the next, we’ll get there.

Meet Harley! He is one of the three horses we recently rescued. Our vet estimates him to be about 8 years old. He has a big fluffy winter coat right now but under that he is all bones. He is now getting proper nutrition, vet care and soon will see the farrier to give his hooves a much needed trim. Welcome to FOR handsome boy, you’re no longer alone.
Donations for his care can be made on our website:

Meet Paisley! She is one of the three mini horses we recently rescued. It didn’t take long for her to become curious about her new life. She’s still a baby, not even 3 years old yet. It’s heartbreaking to know what she’s already been through in her short life but she’s already shown that she’s ready to move on from her past and explore all her new life has to offer.
To help with Paisley’s vet care, donations can be made: www.flareoaksrescue.org
🚨 It’s been a while since we’ve done a rescue like this, but here we go. These 3 horses were in need of immediate rescue. I was given very little information, even some wrong information and I met them in the dark but none of that mattered. What really mattered was getting them moved to safety. They are now here with us in our quarantine pasture, resting, being evaluated and being cleaned up. They are terrified and confused and don’t even know each other. 1 is very skinny, 1 has a severe locking stifle (joint in leg locks up) and 1 has experienced abuse to her head and is wildly protective of herself. We can and will fix all of this. Having our amazing equine veterinarian provide much needed medical care is a top priority. I’ll post them individually soon so you can get to know each sweet soul. ❤️ Ways to help and be a part of their journey: donate, hit our wishlist, share, comment, like! Let’s change some lives and show them the kinder side of life.

Ace saw the vet today after I noticed one of his nostrils was running and his breath was different. Right away I knew he had an infection and called our vet. She noticed one of his teeth has worn down due to age and it allowed bacteria to get in and cause an infection. This can be a common issue for older horses and hopefully antibiotics will take care of it especially since his tooth appears otherwise healthy and not loose. Luckily, Ace is feeling ok and is eating and drinking like normal. This gentle boy is about 25 yrs old and as hard as it is to see him get “old horse issues” I’m grateful to love, protect and care for him in his golden years. After all, he is the horse I built our first farm for.
