Liverpool-based band The Romleys are bearers of brisk and heavily stylistic sub three-minute blues songs, which entertain an attractive uncaring and endearing confidence. “Jailboy” is characterised by its rootsy delivery and charismatic ex*****on - but there is a vivid imagination poured into the production too - all the songs have the kind of errant charm and rams
hackle rockabilly folk feel which is inescapably bound up with live performance - something which these recordings undoubtedly capture. CharmingManMusic blog, Glastonbury:
Most new musicians going for a vintage aesthetic either do it half heartedly or with a modern twist. Though upon hearing The Romleys debut single – We Love Everyone, it’s evident that they’re going all out. First of all, its important to mention that these guys hail from Merseyside. Second of all, its bloody obvious that sooner or later they’re going to be compared to fellow Liverpudlians The Beatles… though that’s somewhat lazy. In an age where more and more bands are incorporating laptops, Kindles, iPhones and whatever else into their sets, its genuinely refreshing to hear a new band going back to such basics. From the off there’s fiery chords, electric overlays and upbeat lyrical content that would get one jiving quicker than a mum would to Agadoo. But seriously, there’s a decisive buzz in the air around this 60′s thing currently and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw these Scousers hit stardom in the near future. Live Review from a Romleys show at Paper Dress, Shoreditch April 2013:
Another week, another visit by Shindig! They do seem equipped at putting on all the best bands at the moment…
The Romleys are probably not known to you, but they should be. The Merseysiders are making a habit of travelling down south for shows, and it’s not hard to see why, as they’re definitely feeling the love from the crowd. The usual three piece line-up tonight was augmented by a very young looking ivory tinkler. No idea who he is, but they should keep him as he added a nice dimension to a sound we’re familiar with – scouse beat. Singer-guitarist Garry Eager has a warm yet strong voice that brings to mind Roger Daltrey, and the dry humour and storytelling nous we associate with Ray Davies. The ramshackle skiffling spirit of the songs even made me think that Edgar Jones’ The Stairs might have been on stereo, alongside the Fab Four and The La’s. Labelling these men as ’60s revivalists would be foolish, as it’s the pre-war spirit of ale houses and loose women that inform the songs as much as rich harmonies and mop tops. As entertainers go they make the music speak for itself. Some attempt at banter was lost on the crowd (maybe they couldn’t understand the accents?), but charm is definitely present and correct, it perhaps just needs teasing out some more. Set highlights were current single ‘We Love Everyone’, the classic British R&B feistiness of ‘I Wanna Know You’re Mine’, and the roll out the barrel friendliness of ‘Honey Pie’. Before we knew it the set was over and the cries of ‘more’ were cruelly ignored. Always leave them wanting more…
The Music Manual blog, Liverpool:
THE ROMLEYS are Liverpool's answer to a constant calling for original, 60's infused music. It's incredibly hard to find the magic that can be placed in that very fantastical era of music without it sounding samey but my, my how they pull it off. This sensational 3-piece are creating music worthy of a critically acclaimed status, bringing a foot-tapping beat back to basics, stripping down all apprehensive opinions, turning them into rays of unmissable musical sunshine, if you haven't listened yet then now is most definitely the time to jump on the Romley train. Their debut single, 'We Love Everyone' has everything I have previously described and more. A finger-clicking introduction sparks off an amazing array of hypnotic vibes circulating the air polluted with remarkable tonal features and bewitching beats. Vocals go hand-in-hand with the genius instrumental factor, completing the perfect partnership to carry on and reach the peaks of musical success, how fantastic this is, not only listen to but experience first-hand.
