Over the next few weeks, I will define terms we use in publishing that we sometimes take for granted we know the meaning of, especially in terms of putting together a book proposal that gets agents' and editors' attention.
A few weeks ago, I defined a query letter and listed the key elements needed for a solid book proposal. It's pinned to my IG profile if you want to go back and review it.
Today, I'm answering...
Q: What is a hook?
A: "A hook is a statement or question designed to generate immediate curiosity and make the reader desire to know more about a book." --Bob Eagar, "How to Create a Book Hook," STARTAWILDFIRE.COM/FREE-RESOURCES/HOW-TO-CREATE-BOOK-HOOK
When I work with authors to develop an effective hook, I encourage them to get it within 50-75 words. If expressed verbally (think elevator pitch), a hook should allow you to tell someone about your book in 30-60 seconds.
Carefully crafted, your hook doesn't need to say everything. It just needs to give the most pointed essence of your book's concept in relationship to your target reader's felt need.
What is felt need? Well, that's a tricky one many people have difficulty defining. But being able to identify your reader's felt need can make or break your book-writing process. Come back here--same place, same time--and we'll talk it through.
If you need lots more help on concepts like these, I dive deeper into each of them--the psychology and science behind them--in my upcoming author mentorship course. Check out jevonbolden.com/write-your-book for details.
