"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken.
Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back."
~Carl Sagan
Confirmation bias coupled with first thought (anchoring) bias (also called the primacy effect). We believe the 1st thing we hear, especially if it fits our favorite internal narrative ... And we stubbornly refuse to accept any new information that might refute our belief, even when the data are overwhelming. My favorite professor in undergrad, Doc Fisher, told us "question dogma" (I wrote it on the inside cover of my text book). Every bit of training in grad school taught me the same thing - be skeptical; ESPECIALLY of the things you WANT to believe.
