Eliza concludes our intros! We hope you enjoyed getting to know a bit about each of us and we hope to continue getting to know all of you on a deeper level during our events!

I'm a sociology major because I am really interested in how power operates and think sociology is a great place to study a ton of different aspects of society. I'm excited to plan fun events for the major and talk to underclassmen about why they should take soc!

Starting off your Monday with Gyana's intro!

I’m Gyana Singh, an Economics and Sociology double major from New Delhi, India and part of the class of 2023. I fell in love with sociology the first time I learnt about it and I look forward to creating that environment for other Grinnellians! I am extremely excited to be on the SEPC for it gives me the opportunity to do that with some of the most amazing people.

Our last intro of the weekend is Jacob's intro!

I chose to be a major in sociology because the classes in the department introduced me to terms that allowed me to talk about things that I was already thinking about. In every sociology class I’ve taken, I have gained a better sense of the world and feel better equipped to think critically about structures, identities, and power.

Saturday's intro is mine (Luz)!

Hi everyone! I’m Luz, a fourth-year Sociology and Biochemistry double major. I first majored in Sociology after taking Introduction to Sociology with Professor Quinsaat and realizing that I had been thinking about and living what I was learning in class for years without having precise language to speak about my observations. Sociology classes have enhanced the way I understand the societal systems that affect me and that I participate in, helping me have a more thoughtful commitment to social justice efforts I care about. Feel free to email me at [alfarolu] or DM me on instagram if you have any input on the Sociology department or want to chat!

Next up: Maddie!

Hi! My name is Maddie, and I love sociology because it is a discipline that helps build empathy and social consciousness, which is not only important for understanding the world, but ourselves and our own cultural identities.

Today we're introducing Ella!

My name is Ella, and I am a Sociology and Chinese major. My decision to major in sociology was one that I made after considering what I ultimately hope to gain from my coursework during my time at Grinnell: the ability to critically examine my own actions and the actions of others, and use this knowledge that I gain from my coursework to hold myself and others accountable.

20/10/2021

Hi everyone! We hope you're enjoying your fall break to the fullest! We'll be providing introductions to everyone on our Sociology SEPC, starting with Katelyn Mehlhaus ’22 (she/hers)!

"I love how sociology aims to explain the social rules of the world around us. When I first took intro to sociology my first year, I was finally able to put a name to and better understand so many unwritten rules in the social world around me." - Katelyn

We'll see you tomorrow for the next introduction!

Come take a break from studying and get pizza with us tomorrow! We’ll have gluten free and vegan pizza too!
