It’s holiday time and things are busy! Here are some tips to help combat stress and fatigue so that you can enjoy the season and stay well:
• Plan ahead whenever possible to make your task list more manageable to accomplish. Take small breaks when executing your to-do list to recover from the holiday bustle, traffic, crowded stores, long check-out lines, end of year work deadlines, etc.
• Try to maintain your healthy habits, even during this busier time of the year. Sticking to your normal eating, sleeping, exercise and mental health routine will help preserve your energy and life balance throughout the season.
• Be aware of how media and marketing influences can bring about undue stress and expectations regarding the holidays. Keep a balanced perspective, remain in tune about what the holidays mean to you and stay within your limits.
• Give yourself permission to say "no" to tasks or holiday gatherings. People have a tendency to overcommit during this time of the year, even if it results in sacrificing their energy, choice, comfort level or financial budget. Remind yourself that it’s perfectly reasonable to set boundaries, even if others have expectations of you.
• Acknowledge your feelings associated with the holidays and identify coping skills that can help you get through the season. Holiday time can bring up different emotions, including challenging ones related to past or present life events. Take a moment to honor those feelings and know that you are not alone. If you need support, reach out to a professional or trusted individual.
