This page has been created to empower people to take control of their health through making changes to the way we eat and think. Why?? Because I could. YES!
This is not just another "low-carb" or diet page, it is about making positive lifestyle changes and "going against the grain" Hi I'm Catharine, a passionate health advocate, who through my own weight loss and health journey, have decided to create a page to benefit others who are looking to improve their overall health. I used to be a swimmer - training 10 times a week up until I quit when I was a
round 15. I was brought up on all the right things - even noni juice before my training and always enjoyed optimal health. When I stopped swimming, I lost the exercise but not the appetite. As time wore on, I did a 180 - all of a sudden, I dived into the world of junk food, fast food and well, just an excess of food in general. And it was addictive. Don't get me wrong, I didn't end up severely overweight, but I gained 22 kilos. I've never had a sweet tooth, it was carbs and grains I loved. So much so that I was eating pasta at least 3 times a week. Once I ended up in hospital from digestive complications. For months, if I ate ANY grains at night I wouldn't be able to stand up straight for hours in the morning. And no, I didn't have coeliacs or any other condition. It was just overload. A couple of years ago, my DOCTOR put me on the Ketogenic diet, I did some research and some modifications and lost the 22 kilos. I've kept it off ever since...and what's more, improved my overall health. So now you have a bit of background, have a read of my short "essay" below! :-)
So I guess I better tell you a bit about the reason behind why I advocate the lifestyle I do - grain/sugar free/low carb....oh my God, WHAT'S LEFT!? Well its certainly not to be "fashionable" and its definitely not to "lose 5 kilos in just 7 days!" There is real, scientific research behind this type of lifestyle; over 40 years of it, in fact. I could give it a label - say, "ketogenic" or "modified paleo" but what it really is is getting back to PROPER food, the food our ancestors ate...not "grain fed Angus beef from Coles", for instance. We ate nuts, seeds, vegetation and prey - the organs (gasp!) bone marrow and all. It has been proven that once man (and woman, lets not get sexist here!) discovered a more cereal-based diet, most civilisations experienced a decrease in stature, an increase in disease and an increase in nutritional deficiencies. As the prevalence of grains and cereals continues to increase, so do the number of people with diseases such as heart, arthritis, diabetes and obesity. Many chronic illnesses can be REVERSED by eliminating grains and starches from your diet. How can it be so easy and why won't my doctor tell me about it you ask?? Well that's a post for another time, however unfortunately the agricultural industry, pharmaceutical industry and national Health Authorities often have their own financial interests at heart more than your health. Sigh... So what can we do?? Don't I need fibre at breakfast and energy throughout the day? And you get these from following my diet advice! In fact the best energy you have ever had...because FAT is our body's preferred source of energy - and cleanest-burning fuel. Once we get over the initial hump of cutting out the culprits, we begin to appreciate our new sense of wellbeing, and so does our body! If you would like more information, let me know. The recipes I post on my page have been adapted from the foods I eat (and crave!) every day. I seek to use predominantly unrefined, fresh, grain free and organic/grass fed produce where possible. I hope you enjoy my ideas, just as much as I have enjoyed creating them and encourage you to contribute and give me feedback. Lose excess weight, gain energy and reclaim your health. Here's to "Living Against the Grain!"
